GC III Counters Too High

Gentlemen,

I just picked up an old GC II or III. The rail counters sit proud of the rail. There is a gap between the top of the rail and the counter rim about the width of a nickel. I can push the counter housing down into it's proper place, but it springs back up immediately.

The table is still disassembled, so I can see the counter, top and bottom, but can't figure out how to remove it.

Also, the mounting ears on the bottom of the counters are flush with bottom of the rail when the counter is showing the gap on top. When I push the counter down flush with the rail, the mounting ears protrude below the bottom of the rail.

Any ideas on what the problem might be?

have this problem on mine. if its a three it should have spring clips with teeth holding it into the hole. take a screw driver and pull towards the inside of the counter (from underneath). you will have to work both sides up and out of the hole.

i think it does it because the wood is pushed in to much or gone so the springs have nothing it grip. something that helped mine was to put electrical tape inside of the hole. take it all around and then put the counter back in. the thickness of the tape gave it something for the teeth to grip into.

Take the counters out of the rail. The problem with them coming back up is because the spring clips are not holding against the sides of the cut out wood to set the counters in, more then likely the wood is gouged out. Nip off the top 1/8" of the springs so they're not trying to hold down the counters in the exact same spots in the wood, bend them a little to assure they'll rub up against the wood sides, and press them back into place.
 
Counters Too High

Thanks rrich1 and RKC. With your help, I got the counters out. To avoid a recurrence, I'll figure out an alternative method of installing the counter in the rail.
