GC III rail bolt problem

Hi all!! I just picked up a GCIII in decent shape, but when I was taking it apart one of the rail bolts would not turn loose...:yikes: The nut inside the rail just kept spinning. I ended up just cutting the bolt to get the rail off. Anyone here ever half this issue, and how can you replace the threaded nut inside the rail??? I appreciate any help. Thanks!

how much threads are left on the bolt? if you can get vise-grips on whats left of the bolt and put a screw or staple in the rail to prevent the floating nut from spinning. you may be able to unscrew the bolt.

thanks for the offer... i need to get the bolt out of the threaded flat nut in the rail. Does anyone know how those are inserted into the rail?
Does the cushion need to be removed?

Had the same problem.

Had the same problem with my GC II. RKC ended up drilling into the bolt remnants 3 times before he was able to get it out. Of course, the nut needed to be replaced. And it was done with the rail off.

You are going to have to remove the cushion either completely or just remove to the point you can access the slot that the flat nut goes into.

Drill out remainder of the bolt so you can remove the nut. either buy a new flat nut or create your own.

I'm not going to get into making your own since I would assume if you have the ability to drill the bolt out and remove the flat nut you can make a new one quite easily.

depends on witch rail is coming off.....remove pockets,remove blind bolts,remove casting bolts,remove rail,remove cloth,use a marker and mark the rail and cushion every few inches "top and bottom"so u know where to put it back on exactly where it came off ....ur gonna have to use a Reciprocating Saw to cut the bolt from inside the opening at the face of the rail....

I already have the rail bolt cut and the rail removed. Now i need to get the bolt out of the threaded washer. I will drill the bolt out and attempt to save the washer, but Im not optimistic. I was hoping to avoid taking off the cushion. Thanks everyone. --- J

Once you get the piece of cut off bolt out of the threaded insert, if the insert is damaged, you could put a threaded plate on the bottom of the rail instead of pulling the cushion off and putting a new insert in. This is not the best way to fix the problem, but is another option for your situation.

U have the rail off with a piece of the bolt cut flush to the bottom of rail and the insert traped inside of rail...remove cushion as I said...look in the slot at the face of the rail"that's why cushion has to be removed"...the piece of bolt is stopping it from coming out because of the stub...ur gona have to cut the stub off by sticking the saw in threw the slot opening and cutting the stub off under the insert..
