gene the machine???

Peggy Gumphrey was Steve's beautiful wife. The Gump was one of the most fun loving pool players ever, always with a big smile on his face! A lot like Tommy Kennedy in that respect. He died way too young from a Melanoma cancer, that remained untreated. He was in his 30's. Steve played good too, maybe a ball under the top players. The very best could only give him the eight ball! Anyone have a photo of Steve?

Steve Gumphrey on the left and Billy Weir on the right - Gumphrey_Weir-s-A84-S3-L.jpg Weir would have been the favorite in this match. Steve Gumphrey died of cancer not long after playing in this tournament.

I saw him not all that long before he died and he told me the story. A dog maybe his, scratched a mole and it would not stop bleeding. He had to go to the doctor and of course they did tests but the doctor knew what he was looking at right away. I guess it was too late when it was found though. I have had skin cancer three times and I found it myself each time. I now go for an annual check up at Cleveland Clinic taking no chances.
Back then we didn't know much and it was often over looked or missed.

I played Steve twice and I have to say, I didn't suspect how good he really played till I knew him later on. He had a good road game and didn't make enemies, pleasant guy to play with. I don't remember a lot about playing him it was so many years ago. I do remember he was very loosey goosey kind of like McCready when he played.
