George Breedlove's side of the story - it's different.

...and if he's nice I won't have Marty Sawinski imitate him or Jeanette.

SL,
Who is Marty S.? Have you ever seen Jeff Carter's imitation of Earl Strickland; I about died laughing.

Anyway, I was glad to see the overall positive comments so far - it certainly confirms my impression of George as a very sportsmanlike competitor (let's forget the hustling days). Also confirms my strongly held contention that we shouldn't necessarily believe everything we see on the internet (I guess I believed it the same as you).

If you guys are going to refer to a world champion while trying to
credit Breedlove, then you should mention his name otherwise your
argument holds no merit.

Also, his absolutely ridiculous proposition that no top pro would ever consider is a joke.

Let me guess, after 30 days of back breaking work he still wants a spot right?

We could all put forth ridiculous propositions pertaining to our personal lives if we wanted to.

A Fillipino player could propose that one live in Manilla for a month with no money and try to survive with just his cue and his wits.

A touring female pro could ask someone to play them after taking a month's worth of physical beatings similair to the kind she may be enduring at the hands of an abusive husband.

If Breedlove wants to act all hard then he should seek
out the best and play them straight up for 50k, I can think of at least half a dozen guys that would fly out to him yesterday for that kind of a bet.

One last thing Breedlove, Cliff Thornburn here in Toronto will play you ANYTIME for 50k, any game, even odds of course, surely you wouldn't need a spot from an unranked Canadian in his 50's right?

Marty came to Michigan from California,is a ICU Nurse in one of the suburbon hospitals around Detroit, excellent player, won few rounds in the US open 9 Ball, does imitations and his imitation of Effren is much better than the others he imitates.

Smash-man,
It appears that you have missed the thrust of the whole thread.

No one is mentioning or bad mouthing the anonymous pro - you can choose to believe what you will - no purpose is served by mentioning names.

There is no spot required after "30 days of back breaking work" for ANY PLAYER IN THE WORLD - that's the point of the proposition.

This is a totally serious proposition. Yes it's a "gimmick" as are ALL interesting proposition bets (perhaps you've heard of them, they are FUN).

There are plenty of players that can "get played" without the proposition, but only a champion could seriously entertain participating (the serious players on the board already are aware of this). Perhaps to you 50K for a month's work is not significant; but I can assure you there are many top pool players that DO NOT make this much per month; and have been tempted to try for the cash.

George is not "acting all hard", and is NOT trying to make any sort of point or boast; he's offering a proposition; and will put his own money on the line. He was only attempting to clarify the proposition, not dazzle YOU with his brilliance; not solicit other types of action (it finds him without the assistance of this board). This was NOT one of those "chumming the waters to stir up some action threads"; only an explanation of the IPT quote. If you are not interested, fine.

whoa

I understand where George is coming for pool is a game where momentum is really important.I've been on both sides and he is right the guy who is playing constantly has an advantage and in the heat of battle it wears on people sometimes.I also think unless you are personally willing to back someone you shouldn't call GB out.If you think you know someone who would like to take that bet then tell them to post on this site and we can all get are side bets down.

"It appears that you have missed the thrust of the whole thread."

No sir, MY point is that his prop is a sham and anyone can
dream up situations that will NEVER take place, and he knows it.

Smash-man,
You are DEAD WRONG. No sham here, the money is waiting for anyone who wants to try. It is very possible that you are not familiar with high stakes gambling (and the people who participate in such). It may never take place, but George would LOVE for someone to try it.

Anyway, you are entitled to your opinion (even if it is wrong).

The sham is the absurdity of the prop!

i think smashmouth's trying to say 'who in the hell wants to work for a month just to get a pool game?'.

i think that point is segregated from whether george is serious or not. maybe someone will step up and try it, but i doubt it, and not because they think they'll lose.

Smash,
I guess I am slow. I don't see the "absurdity" of it AT ALL. Unusual yes, absurd not in any way.

You may not be aware that the top players are always looking for ways to increase the size of wagers they think they can win. He thinks he can win, he thinks there are champion players who will be tempted, he thinks 50K is a lot of money, he thinks many pool players don't have jobs, he thinks many pool players have a month free, he thinks many people enjoy high stakes gambling.

I think it would be a very entertaining month for we spectators, and the participants. I am unaware of your credentials, but I can assure you there are many who do not share your views.

If you have a contestant, then bring him and prove your position. That's all it would take to resolve the issue.

Steev,
The answer is, "someone who has backing and wants to try to get a piece of 50K." I don't think it is as unlikely as you do (though I guess time will tell). I think you would be surprised at some of the things pool players will do for some cash (spend some time with Freddy, Danny, Jay, or Grady and you will hear some REALLY unusual propositions).

People who are not interested in proposition bets; or who think they do not exist should probably be spending their quality time on other threads than this.

I think we should probably not even go into golf-ball throwing or quarter-tossing.

If I was a heavy hitter without a regular job or family, or other responsibilities, and I thought I could beat George after doing the same work he does for a month, I would do it. I would expect the same pay he would pay any person starting in an entry level position, and I would expect the same benefits, etc.

I don't see anything absurd with the proposition. It likely will never happen because of the given requirements, but they are no where near absurd. To put it simple, walk a month in my shoes, then we will play even and lets see who wins.

I heard that Jack Cooney went to work for a guy once for a few months just to get to him, of course the “boss” in that situation did not know what the deal was until it was too late.;)

KG,
Well stated. You get it. Titanic Thompson would be on this like a fly on potato salad; it's a lot of cash. I do think though, that the mere existence of the IPT makes the proposition much less likely to occur.

Im not too impressed with this proposition

I, for one, am not impressed with this proposition. Sounds to me like whining disguised as a bet. I like Breedlove and I think he plays a great stick. He could play a whole lot better if he didnt have his funiture buisness and Efren would not play as good as he does if he had to work like George does. I think that is just common sense. I would be a whole lot better of a pool player if I didnt teach all day long.

This whole proposition just sounds like spilled milk to me. Nobody is gonna take the bet and nobody should take the bet. Nobody gives a sh*t how good you could be if you didnt have to work. Nobody gives a sh*t how much better you would be if the playing field was leveled by a work schedule.

I have a hypothetical proposition for George...take the month off... play as much as you want... ill run your buisness...get together $100,000....ill back Efren in 8ball, 9ball, or 1 pocket. Do you think he would take it???

One major part of being a great player at any game is the sacrafice one gives up for his trade. I hate hearing that crap...I would have played better but I havent been able to play. Ive been working too much. Tough crap...you lost.

Just my 2 cents

(in no way is this post meant to be demeaning to George Breedlove...he is actually one of my favorite players and I think he is a standup guy)

Priceless. This from the great one who may need a spot of 11 games in a race to 10 with a pro, if he can find a 10' table

Dave, who doubts Cliff would be into working for a month

B-man,
Once again I will re-iterate that this proposition was made in response to one of those "top players" pressuring for huge wagers; not as some sort of excuse, not as some sort of statement about relative skill levels. It's just a proposition. These roadies want the nuts and a large wager (and seem QUITE adept at finding George at the end of 12 hour days:) ), this is just one way for them to get the large wager they profess to want. I hope that is clear.

Also please re-read the thread; George is happy with his game as is; and has never made ANY statement to my knowledge that says he would be ANY better with regular play and practice.

P.S. - I have heard George say on several occasions, that Efren is the greatest player he's ever seen; and that he feels privileged to have been able to compete with and against him. They are friends, and I think their matching up days are behind them (I'm pretty sure Efren isn't taking this proposition).

P.P.S. - I am also fairly certain that this proposition was not made with impressing you in mind. It is what it is, try not to read more into it than that.

I always liked the saying, before berating someone, you should walk a mile in there shoes, then you can do whatever you want because you will be a mile away and have there shoes. :D
