George Fels Derby City Straight Pool Challenge

Cleaning the balls this years is automated thanks to using a diamond dual platter ball cleaner. Here is a link of the cleaner in action in slo mo from a prior year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SukXYHYYTRU

We also use a towel and polish I am not sure what polish is being used but the balls are rolling great.

Dana - thanks for the information. Is there any chance you can find out exactly what is being used to clean the balls? Also when they are being spun in the ball machine is there anything added or is the cleaner applied only when rubbing with a towel?

Not to hijack the thread, but Diamond recommends either Aramith ball cleaner or Meguiars Ultimate Quick Detailer shown on http://www.diamondbilliards.com/index.php/accessories/ball-polishers.

I use Meguiars since it leaves no residue nor does it cake up the cleaning pads like the Aramith ball cleaner.

Dan: I put a small amount of aramith ball cleaner on them and let them spin. Sometimes I have a bit on a towel and just stick the towel up against the balls as they are spinning. When We have the time, I may then use the microfiber cloth just to make sure nothing is caked on the balls.

The players have the option of clean balls when they start.

Take a look at my post regarding throw over time. I'd wager that the Meguiars throw changes dramatically after 10 or 20 shots, like the Novus did. If you ever get the chance, it'd be great to see you do the experiment and see what you find out.

I see that both Schmidt and Stepanov are both at 99. This makes me curious as to if this is just a random coincidence that they are each one shy of the century mark or if even the great ones get nervous around that number, even if they have run a lot more? They have both obviously run hundreds of balls(especially Schmidt) and I wouldn't really think that would be a factor until they get close to their personal high runs. I'm leaning towards just random coincidence in this case. Any thoughts?

Thanks, Dennis. Good to see they you are using Aramith, as that seems most consistent. I spoke to Bludworth about my ball machine and they suggested a way I can clean my wool cloth to get some of the Novus out. The other option is to rip the wool out and replace it with new.

Thanks again!

You may want to get some techical input from the people at Meguiar's. This is not a cleaner. I don't think you are correct in thinking that the product you're using doesn't leave something on the balls.
As to why Diamond recommends it... I have no idea.

Here's the product description:

The most advanced high bead and deep gloss spray detailer! Meguiar’s®, the company that brought car enthusiasts the world’s first spray detailer, now introduces a revolutionary mist and wipe product that works like a spray detailer and enhances wax protection. This totally unique formula represents a significant breakthrough in technology that has even our eyes popping! Through the use of new Hydrophobic Polymer Technology™, Meguiar’s has created a spray detailer that actually repels water, withstands multiple car washes, and adds additional protection to your finish. The secret lies in the high level of surface tension created when these revolutionary polymers react. The result is a slicker, darker surface and incredible water beading! You will feel your towel almost float across the surface. The gentle, high lubricity formula is safe on all paint types including the latest clear coats and can be used daily to remove loose contaminants, dust and grime to keep your car looking its absolute best. It’s so easy, you can detail a full size car in less than 10 minutes!

I don't think it has anything to do with nerves, myself. 7 racks gives you 98 balls. So each of them made the break ball in the 8th rack but nothing else. Not having seen what actually happened I can only guess that they just didn't have a good break shot and had nothing good to shoot at.

I didnt get to see the runs, but sometimes even on the best breakshots. landing the cueball in the most optimal locations after the break, you dont always have a great shot.

just something i've observed with my own play.

Well at least it doesn't seem to leave much if any residue on the balls. Before purchasing the Diamond ball polisher I cleaned the balls by hand using the Aramith ball cleaner. It did a good job but it was very tedious and after using a microfiber cloth to clean them I had to use a couple clean microfiber cloths to wipe off some residue. Before I purchased the Diamond ball polisher, the representative did not recommend putting any cleaner or polish in the unit and told me I needed to first clean the balls by hand with the Aramith cleaner, then wipe them off, like I used to do and then put them in the unit to polish / buff the balls. I wasn't to thrilled with the idea of spending $500+ for the unit and still have to do the labor by hand. This advice delayed my purchase of the unit by a year at which time the representative said that it was ok to use the Aramith polish diluted with water in a spray bottle. At that time, they also suggested the Meguiars cleaner. A friend of mine who bought a Diamond ball polisher, used Aramith polish in it and had a bad experience with it caking up in the cleaning pads. He purchased new pads, tried the Meguiars cleaner and had a much better experience. So I took his suggestion.

As for the effects of various cleaners on throw, I have not done any experiments but I have not notice any significant inconsistencies in the amount of throw over the last two years plus of using Meguiars. I'll be sure to post any results if I perform the experiment.

This is all very interesting, but i thought this thread was about 14.1 not about ball cleaners. Could you possibly start a ball ceaner thread.

feeling sorry Stepanov is out but we have Chinakhov to root for!!!

(don't get me wrong but the challenge poster from the previous page makes me feel sick when I see "Ruslan Stalev" announced there. A misprint in Stepanov's name is nothing compared to that. No sour grapes, just wish our American fellows were more attentive to foreign participants they introduce)

Well, it's nothing compared to how inattentive our Chinese friends can be with our language:

But hey, we know what you're saying. It's along the same lines of the public when asked to name a famous pool player, and they answer "Fats Domino". :(

What ever happened to Evgeny Stalev? That cat was a beast. There's a vid on youtube of him running 225+.

Thank you for all the hard work that you do Dennis, Bill, Dana and everyone else that's involved including the Sponsors. Without all of you this great event would not be possible.

From what I watched on the stream, the event was great !!!

Can't wait to see more of the videos when finished !

Keep up the great work

I had the names spelled right but tvmike made some spelling mistakes on his poster. Konstantin's first name was spelled wrong, too.

Kostya had told me that Stalev was coming, but it did not happen. They said he was a little bit of a wild card and liked to play poker and might have been doing that instead. As an aside, they told me they were really surprised at Stalev's 225 at the World's because he is not really a straight pool player.

Chinahov has a very nice 14.1 game with a very smooth rhythm to it. Wait until you see.

Chinahov has also a really smooth long stroke. I wasn't suprised he won.

I elbowed everybody away and scored all his runs last year because I was mesmerized by his smooth stroke. He even walks smooth.

Congratulations to Dennis, Bill and Dana for a great event again this year. They really made the trains run on time - the finals were on Accu-Stats on Saturday afternoon, and I don't remember the 14.1 ever completing so early.
