So I think I might be getting a new cue added to the collection. I think I'm almost decided. I think I'm going with a Ginacue. Any suggestions or opinions?

Have one built by Ernie to your specs. Also, have him do something a little different to the cue (assuming you going with one of his standard designs) to make it a one-of-a-kind. I suggest going with an Ivory joint and Ernie's smooth leather wrap.

although you can't go wrong with a ginacue, i strongly suggest you check out chudy, before you buy a gina.

Yes, start saving your money. No, seriously, great choice. Even his simple 4 point cues can be extremely beautiful.

Yes, get a bank loan and see if Ernie has a 40th anniversary cue left. They were like 7500 or so. In 5 years or less, you will be thanking me.

Thanks for the responses. Opinions on how ginacue's typically hit, collectability. desirability?

Very collectable.
The hit? They're too expensive to play with.
If you are looking to get one to play with, you are looking for the wronng reasons. :D

Ernie Gutierrez has been the cuecraftsman that I have looked up to ever since I was introduced to custom cues. And because of this admiration, I have investigated his work inside (with x-ray) and out (magnifying glass and intense light).

Exterior:
Topnotch finish, unequaled leather wrap, great design balance (ratio and proportion of components) and choice of materials for the design elements, and very meticulous self-critic approach on every area of manufacture.

Internal:

Topnotch structural system that exhibits tight tolerances (no trapped air voids visualized). He does vary his structure depending on the materials used and this is a sign of great understanding of the materials used and available in relation to a customers preferences.

His cuecrafting process, specially the choice and preparation of materials, makes him 1 of 3 whose cue shows hardly any shrinkage after 3 years when used in another country. Absolutely head and shoulders above the rest.

Playability? What do you expect from a solidly built cue?
Collectibility? You can't go wrong!

You are going to shoot pool with it? Why, that's an outrage!

No, seriously. Gina's were playing cues for top players way before they were collectors cues. Nobody knows more than Ernie. He started long ago, selling his cues in Johnson City. Before you knew it, every pro had one. They were simply the best cues in the world in the 1960's. My original Gina was in my Corvette when it was stolen. The car I could live without. Losing the cue broke my heart.

Before you decide you're going to buy one, you should call him to see if you even can buy one.

Ginacue (Ernie) makes a great plain 5 point cue for the low end price of about $1200 which includes a Whitten case...
this was the deal last year.
solid and feels good to play with....
Why buy a great cue and not play with it?

so Ernie "choose" his customers?

Not really but he "screens" them.
Too many people waste Ernie's time at his shop. He probably got sick of it.

Based on what criteria?? just curious..

Snookered <=== that explained Ernie never reply his email.. :(

Snook, I don't know how. But, usually, people that go there are referred by or come with somebody Ernie knows.

A friend of mine has bought expensive cues from Ernie . He should be picking up his anniversary cue soon. If I catch him, I'll ask.

new cue

Well folks I'm off to Ernie's shop today. Let you all know how it goes.

In the mid sixties I was a kid and used to go to Ye Old Billiard Den and watch a thin mexican guy play bank pool. He was always well dressed and was liked by all. He had this standing bank pool game every night. His name was Ernie and his daughters name was Gina. He had this cue that he had for sale which he said he had made. He was asking $250. It was a beautiful cue with an ivory butt. I was making something like a $1.50 an hour at a book store down the street. No way could I afford it. A hollywood agent bought it and I hear that cue is worth now something like $25,000. Little did I know then.

new cue

well folks, I'm back and a couple thousand bucks lighter. I think this one may be the last cue I ever get. Cocobolo forearm and butt sleeve, five points four veneers, Ebony points with black/white/black/white veneers, no inlays (couldnt afford them), ivory joint and white phenolic buttcap, smooth black leather wrap. Wont get it for another 8 months, but I can hardly wait to take delivery of that black whitten case containing my new prize. Who knows, from now till then I might just upgrade to some fancy rings at A,B,C,D and add a few inlays, possibly an ivory buttcap.

Over at Billiard Connection, Granada Hills, an employee there has a gorgeous Ginacue that I would love to have copied. It's either 4 or 5 points, no inlays, but with the stain and veneers and super clean work, it truly is a beautiful cue. I think hers was $2,200. 8 months isn't terrible. How much did you have to pay now?

Chris

new cue

I paid the standard rates Ernie charges. I wonder if I know the girl you are talking about at Billiard Connection. I probably have run into you (Tate) a few times. Are you down there pretty often.

It's April who has the cue. It's defintely worth checking out.

What I meant was, how much down payment now, or did you have to pay for the whole cue just to wait 8 moinths?

I go down there Wednesday nights. Say hi if you see me.
