Going to Reno.

I have gone to lots of tournaments for a day or two and always felt like I was missing something when I left.I always told myself if I ever had the time and money I would like to go to a couple big tournaments, for the entire event, back to back to see what that life is really like. Due to a few things falling the way they did I now have a little of both to play with. My own little "Playing Off The Rail" if you will.

So yesterday I was flipping through Billiards Digest and saw the ad for the Sands tournament, and thought, "Why the hell not?". One of the oldest tournaments with a great history (Efren's kick against Earl back in the day) backed up by the greatest tournament of my era, Derby City. Can't ask for more than that. I was able to get a reasonable flight and the hotel is silly cheap so I am Reno bound this Friday.

If I get there in time I will play in the Pro Am and probably the main event. After getting my nuts shot in, I will enjoy the atmosphere that only a casino full of pool players can provide. I may even go outside and take some pictures.

I would love to meet any AZer's that are going, your first beverage of choice is on me. I am easy to find 6' 6" with a black Whitten and/or camera. PM me if you would like to play some pool or sweat a match.

I have absolutely no idea how this tournament is run (part of the fun I think) If there is after hours action to be found I will seek it out and provide reports as well as events of the tournament itself.

Make sure to check out the DCC forum; there will be many activities in the AZB room that you will be sure to enjoy.

When you get back; let me know. I am thinking we should have a regular Sunday "DCC warmup" session in Betmore's Basement for local players thinking of competing in January. Maybe we can convince satman to make it down from Muncie and show us a few things.

Sunday's sound good. You are right about Satman having some things to show us, I saw him play last Saturday at a tournament in Edinburgh, he plays solid, and a nice guy.

Don't rush for the pro am if your not a current usppa member with enough play dates. I don't think you can play as you have to qualify with 14 play dates in 6 months

The other poster is right about the pro am, it is strictly usppa membership run. But for information(unless u already entered) you can save 25 bucks if you enter today by a credit card. Otherwise you will have to pay $150.00 Signups ended Nov. 21 except by credit card Nov. 30. The action is nowhere near like DCC but there can be a lot. A lot of the pool players go broke on the crap tables. I usually go but my daughters wedding busted me and will take awhile to recover. Also most of the players don't show up until Monday. Glad to hear you are going, and will report to us here at AZB whatever happens there; tell us about the action and what Pros are there; Unfortunately this is one year I can't make it up there.....Also if you can find out why they eliminated the June tournament, I'd like to know....used to be 2 tournaments a year, one in June and one in December......might be a bit nippy outside, but if you stay inside, beware of the casino tables....they really suck up your $$$ there......

A friend of mine told me to go to Tahoe, said it was amazing.I might just rent a car and see what I can find.

As far as the main tournament, do they close the room down at night, or leave it open for practice/action? I heard there are some pool rooms close to the Sands, anyone know anything about them?

When I was at the June tournament this year, seems like they did keep the tables open all night after the tournament....If not, there is a place called Keystone Billiards about a mile or so away that players have gambled at after the tournament....It will be good to rent a car and if you plan to drive over to Tahoe it will take one to one-and-a-half hours to get there.....It's mid 40's in the daytime and low 20's at night there now, so beware of icy roads, although the weather is supposed to be clear for the next week....If you haven't been to Reno before, try the lunch or dinner buffet at the El Dorado Hotel and Casino downtown on S.Virginia Street....or drive south on S.Virginia for a couple miles to the Atlantis....their buffet is good too....if you like a real bargain giant hamburger and fries, check out the "Nugget" on S.Virginia St....It's just a "little hole in the wall" slot machine joint with a bar on the side, but the diner in the back has lots of good deals and many locals eat there....enjoy your stay in Nevada!
