gold crown 8x4 for possible trade

hi, i have an 8x4 gold crown pool table that i just bought and set up that my wife does not like. we have an older house and she wants something in an older style. the pool table delivery guy told me that it was a rare size for the table that would be in demand with serious pool players so i thought i would see if anyone is interested in a trade. i am in the pnw. i would be looking for an older style 8x4 brunswick or similar to suit a house built in the 1920s.

i am no pool table but it plays beautifully to me. playing surface is 92"x 46" and apparently this means it is a "competition 8". the slate is also apparently perfect. the centre slate levelled with the feet only and both side slates required no adjustments. cloth is somewhat worn but apparently is either original or the second set.

top rails have zero scratches or blemishes. all the metal fittings are perfect other than minor scratches. there is a chip visible in the photo on the upper part of one of the legs, and the apron skirt paint is rubbed away on one corner and has a few small scratches. otherwise it is in very good condition and i can provide close up photos of all blemishes. it seems it sat in a basement for a long time and the felt was very very dusty.

anyway, please let me know if you are interested and have a table to offer, or feel free tell me it is worthless so i can tell my wife and keep it, because i actually like the thing quite a bit although i guess i will admit it doesn't match the house.

I've got a better idea. Get all that old furniture and junk out of there and build yourself a cool poolroom. You know with bar stools, pool stuff on the walls, a cue rack, etc. Old house, new house, what's the difference? A man needs his space! That room screams POOLROOM to me! By the way, you've got a damn good table there. Don't be so quick to dump it.

hi, i am in bc, canada just over the border from washington state. nearest city would be spokane or wenatchee. i am prepared to take it over the border to meet for a trade.

i am not looking to dump the table. i looked for a long time before i bought this one, and i like it. however, it does not match the house and so i told the wife i would agree to trade it for an older table.

and the room is perfect for a pool table because it was designed that way! it is labelled "billiard room" on the old house plans and has a reinforced floor and a 6" deep closet for pool cues. it is sized for a 6x12 but i couldn't get that to fly as it is also a family room. underneath those tiles is original hardwood and eventually we will refinish it. right now it is clogged with furniture and stuff from two other rooms we are redoing.
 
so i had a pm asking me for a cash price. i would only sell for cash if i could use that cash to buy and ship a table that was on the market that fit my needs. i don't know if this is a realistic goal but the pool guy thought i might get lucky.

i just searched and found the same table listed here a year ago except it had a ball return but the guy wouldn't name a price. is it against forum rules to ask people what it is worth?

you've got to be kidding me? we are in world wide recession thats the worst the US has ever seen, and your wife is complaining about style? i wish i had room for a table, any style. maybe its not the table that needs to be replaced? :eek: i'm just kidding anyway ;).

good luck with your search, and no its not agaist rules to not name price or take offers, or ask for others opinions on value, but likely you wont get any responses in the range your looking for cause everyone is always looking for a deal.

No rule aginst asking a price.

What you have is a Gold Crown 1, probably from the '60s. I bought one 18 months ago on eBay for $1,500 USD. Since then I've seen just a few of them posted here and there, and I don't think I've found one as cheap as I paid. They play very well, but because of their more 'retro' styling, will probably always be valued less than the ubiquitous GC3, which I believe go for about $2,500 USD now. With that in mind, $2,000 is about the average "asking price" that I see on these tables.

Now I'll ask the obvious: why inquire about current market value when you recently purchased the table. Wouldn't what you just paid be a good indicator of it's current value?

Lastly, I thought I'd point you to a resource for older Brunswick tables so that you can see what was made, and what might better match your decor, although I recommend avoiding the hassle and swapping out the wife. ;)

What did you pay for your table??

Did it have plastic skirts under the aprons???

thanks. the sellers were moving and i was told by the guy who moved the table that i got a good deal. if $2000 is the value then i did well on price. i really have no idea and i hope i don't seem like i am trying to turn a buck here. i looked for nearly two years before buying this table and was perfectly content to keep it, but the pool guy said it might be desirable to someone else and it is definitely not what my wife wanted (she okayed it based on a photo of the top rails) so i thought i would just ask if anyone wants a trade. i prefer a trade and i guess my asking price to sell would be the cost of a table that suits the house better that was for sale somewhere that i could buy it right now (and there are none around here or i would have bought them!). we have an old 1920s house with fairly simple unstained wood trim so i would say anything older with a wood trim finish that is plain and simple in style is what i am after.

no plastic skirts. i saw them on the table with a ball return. were those on all tables?
 
Does you wife not like the fact that its not all wood? If so you can probably get someone to refinish the skirts and legs in wood. I'm no expert and I'm not sure how much that would cost, but you would get to keep the table. I have seen plenty of pics of GC's with all wood.

I'm currently in the market for your exact table. I'm too far away to buy your table. Based on my limited research your table is worth 1-2K depending on the condition. That price seems to have been falling over the last several months (surprise surprise)

IMO...

Take a look at the link Mr Hoppe posted, and see what you can find in a 4 x 8 table. Most antique tables are going to be 4 1/2 x 9 or larger. Then ask the wife how much family room she is willing to give up to get an antique table. (not to mention additional $$ for something good condition!) Just don't give up that great playing table for a newer table that looks good, but plays poorly.
