I remember some discussion on putting a brace on the frame of a Crown, is this true and if so where, how and why?

This fix is specifically for the GC4 frame. The problem with the frame on "4" is that the end pieces are not supported as well as they could be, so the weight of the slate might cause sag over time. BY using the angle irons you are essentially beefing up the support for the end pieces, thus eliminating any potential for sag. It's quick, easy, cheap, and it works.
