Gold Crown I Aprons Don't Align Correctly

Hi. I just finished refinishing the aprons on my 9' GC I. I'm having a difficult time reattaching the aprons. I read through the recent thread about the guy's skirt falling off but that hasn't helped. I've tried swapping the sides around and my aprons already have the alumininum holder things cut down to 4 6inch pieces on the long sides and 3 on the head side.

The guy who set up my table originally wasn't able to get the aprons on very well either...they seemed to be secure but there was a sizable gap between each apron piece in the corners. When I put them on, it seems like the pieces fit OK on the top side of the table, but on the bottom side they split wide apart to the point where it is nearly impossible to insert the metal parts that latch the two sides together. The aprons seem to sit well on the rail when they are on there by themselves. Any suggestions? I'm in Goldsboro, NC if there happens to be any expert mechanics in this area, but I figure I should be able to attach the aprongs myself. Thanks, Gil

If they are touching at the top and not the bottom the problem sounds like the are not swinging all the way in. The aprons are quite tapered to the floor when swung all the way in. Also make sure they are perfectly centered and all brackets are tight. Put the head one by itself just to get the feel for how far they actually swing in.

Thanks, I'll try attaching the aprons to the rails differently than how I'm doing it now....because they aren't swinging in that much the way I'm doing it (maybe 10 degrees in). I see how the aprons would fit together perfectly if they were swung in 20-25 degrees however.

Yes, its about seating the metal apron flange fully into the rail channel. Hold the apron at about a 45* to the rail with the sole aim of ensuring the flange goes as far into the rail channel as possible, then swing it downward watching the gap (for uniformity) across the apron top as you do so. And, as others have said, ensure the apron is centered across the rail(s).

Thanks for the help. I got the aprons to fit perfectly now. I didn't have the aprons seated deeply enough into the rails for them to swing all the way in before. It's a bit tricky though, because the aprons feel very securely attached to the rails even when they aren't completely seated.

Again, thanks for the help...I'll post pics of the table later when it's completely done. I stripped the old paint off (four layers of it), stained the wood, then put on five layers of tung oil finish. One of the long side aprons has beautiful three dimensional tiger striping going across almost the entire length... prettier than any piece of wood I've seen on a Gold Crown before.
