Go for the IV....or a GCI if available.
I think a lot of the GC111's are the worst Gold Crowns ever made.

Any Gold Crown can be made to play at it's best...depending on the table mechanic. One thing to keep in mind about that GC1 you like so much....it didn't come with real slate...whereas the GC3 did;)...and the GC3 didn't use extruded moulding to attach the rail skirts....or wood screws to hold on the ball box...screwed into the bottom of the end rail;)

Ah..the Master is on-line...I appreciate any info from you.
I only know what I like playing on...not much technical details here.
Had a friend bought a whole room full of GC111's..they stunk...
..needed new rubber in less than 3 years..and the pocket mouldings
weren't fitting too good either.
Play on a lot of GCI's that still play well with original rubber..and I like
the IV's.
I'm more impressed with Diamond smart...I like the one piece slate.

I'd probably like any table that you installed..I've learned a lot from your
posts..especially the angle of the jaws that give a clean fall.

My GC III plays fine and looks great. It was never in a pool hall though, and it was installed by a very good mechanic.

Listen to the pros.

Can you expand of that a little. What do you mean by not real slate? I think the rail assemblies seem better on the older tables. Except for the little plates with all the screws that the rail bolts go into. The corner castings are very heavy and smooth, where as the newer ones are like tin like and you can actually tear your clothes on them. How do the frames compare between the older ones and newer ones, wood used, etc?

Brunswick didn't always used slate, they used a sandstone marketed as Brunstone, and Bluestone, which they claimed was just as good as slate. I read online here that nearly all the GC1 were originally sold with Brunstone, not slate. FWIW, alot of people claim the GC1 plays better than II or III.

Back to the OP, here is a comparison chart of GC III & IV.

What he said, the III's are not well made. Poor rubber, all the bronze metalwork corrodes and they were foreign made I believe.

By far the best deal going is a Gold Crown I. With all the pool halls closing around they can be had for $800-$1200 most everywhere. These are built unbelievably well and no GC has outplayed them since. If you can get a GC IV or V at a good price take it, but for value the GC I is the way to go. it's easy to refinish them if needed, with basic scrape and paint technology (elbow grease).

dam Glen... where ya been .. looks like you retired to the life of a salesman .. LOL

Hey buddy....I'm just out here recalibrating rails on older Diamond's is all....and trying to play salesman. I'll be passing through your area later this month....might have time to stop in and see ya. What ever happened to Bill's rails up there in Miss?

Glen
