Gold Crown Journey

Life is but a journey. I laugh a little as I am in part 2 in my journey so far. I sold my Olhausen 8 foot table that served me well for about 10 years. I sold it for $1000, and I felt fortunate to get that much for it. It was going to need a refelting of the table so I thought getting the $1000 as is was good.

I was told that a friend of mine had a Gold Crown I with new simonis. What I found was a Gold Crown III with cloth that needs replaced... The casings and feet are scratched up, but the wood looks good.

I bought it, and I should be getting the table in a couple weeks (friend is delivering it for free 3 1/2 hours away)

I made a couple calls today, and a local guy will powdercoat the pockets and feet (10 pieces) for approximately $70. I am thinking I will take the score frames and anything else I can get off done as well. I am planning on coloring them the bronze. There were a couple examples done and their tables look great with green simonis and the bronze.

I will have the table and rails covered by a professional when I get the odds and ends done.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

The journey continues!

Hard to beat $70. I personally don't like the look of powdercoat paint on a Gold Crown. But some do. I believe that Gold Crowns look best when you chrome everything except the pocket castings which you have plated in electro-less nickle so they are not so shinny. Plus, electro-less nickel is corrosion resistant. But you won't get that done for $70. First you have to stripe, buff and polish out all the scratches and then re-plate.

Just for more information. Locally there is Browns Plating. It is nationally known for being one of the best plating companies in the country.

I asked them about plating the feet and casings of the the table. Strangely enough they said they have done many of them at about $800 per table.

The guy I called on the power coating said about $70.

LOL.

Refinishing GC Castings

Ken,

Regardless of what finish you choose, it will eventually chip or get scratched. If you sent it out to be finished originally, you will have to send it back out for repair or refinish.

I chose to do my GC3 metal with a finish I could do at home. I sanded all parts, then shot automotive primer from a spray can. After scuffing, I coated with Valspar gold metal flake. Just for grins, I applied two coats of Valspar clear.

Everything looks very nice. It's been six months now and I play every day. To date, the only blemish is a very small chip on the sharp edge of a pocket casting. Hardly noticeable. However, if wanted to, I could touch it up in ten minutes without even having to remove the casting from the table.

Although I have considerable experience with various spray finishes in my line of work, the GC metal refinish was really just "do it yourself"' skill level.

With the success I had, I would never consider powder coat. Plating, maybe. But if you want a plated surface, you can buy brand new stuff from Classic Billiards for less than you can have your old stuff replated.

One of the many advantages to the spray can route, is if you decide you don't like it, you're only out about $15.00.

Congratulations to you on being a Gold Crown owner.

The place to play is Side Pockets. Dickie Todd owns it and plays there.
