Good Lathe for a Brand New Repairman??

on a budget. this is what you should do

i assembled mine out of parts and i am very happy with it and cam a little over 500.

1- get a longer lathe bed. http://www.midamericapool.com/index_files/Page311.htm get the 190$ one.

2-headstock - get the regular taig head stock with a 3 jaw chuck. http://www.taigtools.com/mlathe.html (call taig directly and tell them you want a complete head stock with a 3 jaw chuck.) under 100$

pulleys - see what taig tells. they sell them as well, 2 pulleys plus a belt.

3 motor - http://www.pennstateind.com/store/TCLVSKIT.html best bang for buck

3.5 - get the carriage and cross slide assembly with a tool post from taig.

4 you will need plastic collets to protect the shaft - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pool-CUE-Ma...192?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51a088a708

contact the guy i got 7 collets for 50$. get a variety and don't forget to get a shaft one as well for cleaning.

5- drilling tail stock - talk to taig lathe

6 - concave live center - cue components- best price nice quality -http://www.cuecomponents.com/colce.html

7 - get tips whatever you like really but tom hay has some really nice ones here.

8- ferrules - variety cue components

9- build a steady rest for your lathe for the back or the shaft, look up the design here on az or buy one already made.

now you will be able to do tips and ferules. once you start making some money and learn get more parts but you have a solid start.

You will have zero fun and hate what your doing if you buy that piece of crap. You will just damage shafts and waste $250. When I started I decided I was going to spend the money and get a hightower. I've seen the plus's and minus of the machine. If good value and you can come to make cue that could sell for thousands. A lot of people seem to ask this question and to me if your asking this question your just showing how ready your not. Take the time and do research on your own. I asked questions but I read more than anything. Truly know what your getting yourself into. You need to be confident in what your going to buy without some else reassuring you.

Hope you figure it out. Sorry if this seems harsh it's not my intention

and definitely have the itch lol..

AD

See a doctor now! Scratching that itch will cost 10 grand and any spare time you ever though you had.

Since I dought you will listen to me. Welcome to the addiction!

If your not in a hurry, about every few months a repair lathe will show up for sale here. Till then read all you can.

You'd be better off buying good Porper tools and re tipping by hand than wasting good money on that piece of junk.

I can guarantee you that the results will be much better with practice.

If you bought something like that, you'd be instantly disillusioned on what the hobby and trade are really like and end up hating it and probably being frustrated.

Like 63 said, good lathes come up often so just be a little patient and you will find one for the right price if you don't want to go new.

Until then, read everything you can and even go into the archives and grab more info. Lots of UTube vids on replacing tips and ferrules.

lathe?

This is where it belongs

stay away

Don't even look at that thing!!!!
My brother got one just to do his own tips and the 1st one would not turn on right out of the box, the 2ND one turned off in the middle of doing his first tip.
He gave it to a guy he knew, he the guy got it working and then heard it threw the shaft he was working on into his garage door, he was told that guy got rid of it a month later.
Spend the extra even if it is to do your own stuff you will not regret it, I've had my Hightower for about 8 yrs now (without a problem at all) it has by far paid for itself, i think it was paid for in the first year. But be very careful it will lead you to saving to buy a BIGGER one .
Just my opinion but do some shopping & good luck!

Regards,
Joe

I wouldn't piss on that machine if it was on fire.....
-CBI1000

In searching for an appropriate way to post a response I found that I really couldn't provide any further, better information than this here response (thanks CBI1000), except to say that I might be tempted to light it on fire myself. This POS is a waste of your hard earned dough or even a waste of your time to reach out and pick it up if you were to find it brand new and boxed on your door step. If the ebay seller tries to offer you one for free, run as far and as fast as you can, avoid it as though it were the plague, it's crap. Have I made my position clear? For the money you're talking about look at the midamericapool.com web site, you really can't go wrong there. Todd is a great guy to deal with and makes an excellent product and provides excellent support. But a word or warning: you'll never be able to stop with the first one you get. I started with his basic 4 ft. repair lathe and the last thing was my wife made me get a dust collector (rightly so). Though needless to say, there have been many accessory and equipment purchases between the first and most recent. It never stops.
