good pool movies

Hi all!
I actually posted this on the other thread about pool movies but since it involves a new film and few regular contributors at this site I'm posting here also.

After visiting this great site for a while this is my first post and I'm kind of happy it's about pool movies.

Like all of you I have loved and played pool most of my life but there have been large blocks of time when I haven't played at all. I've also been amazed at how few really good pool movies there are.

I am an actor by trade and about 6 months ago I finished acting (and contributing as a pool advisor) in a fairly large roll in a movie titled 'Turn the River'. The movie is not about pool but pool plays a big part in the story. It's the first film by Chris Eigeman. Famke Jensen (Jane Grey in X-MEN) is the lead character. Rip Torn, Lois Smith, Terry Kinney are in the cast. Tony(The Silent Assasin) Robles has a small part and does a beautiful job. Jude Rosenstock (yes that Jude Rosenstock) was cast in a small supporting roll after giving a great audition untill some last minute script changes unfortunately eliminated his part. (very common in the film business).

The latest info I got from the director is that the film will be entered in the various big film festivals: Cannes, Sundance, Toronto etc. to get the best distributor possible. I think they already have a distributor but are looking to find a stronger one.

I just wanted to put this info out there and hope the film gets into the theaters.

My all time fav is "The Hustler", by far the greatest pool movie. Great script and story. Also because pool is what Eddie loves and is passionate about. He feels the greatest as a person when he is playing this great game. It showed the dark side of pool but it also showed the beauty and greatness of it and why we love it.

Pool Hall Junkies is the pool movie I wish was never made. I was stunned after I saw it. It was so negative about pool and the pool world. It was supposedly written by two guys that love the game (go figure). I was also amazed at how many wonderful actors were in it.

Anyway, I'm happy to be part of this site.

I watched Poolhall Junkies last week. I have to say I did feel like sticking knitting needles in my eyes afterwards! It had a few fun moments but that was it.

I felt sorry for Rod Steiger, wish he could've done better for his last movie.

i thought Rod Steiger was the best actor in a bad movie, why was everyone so pissed off and confrontational to each other?, it made me uncomfortable both times i have seen it, Cotton(Robert LeBlank) the technical advisor or what his title was, was ignored nothing like that happens in pool rooms, knocking action etc. stupid movie

I just meant I would've liked to see Steiger bow out in a good movie, not some DTV trash like that. I did like Walken in it though, but then I like him in everything!:D

Barron and the Kid

I'm not saying it is a good movie but it is about pool. The Barron and the Kid, with Johnny Cash.

Did anyone see "9 Ball"? I recall reading about it but never heard anything else about it. May never even got made. Not sure.

Boy, you summed it up. Uncomfortable is how I felt about it. Like when the lingire stuff comes on when you're watching TV with your Mom. The difference is that I feel that way even watching Poolhall Junkies by myself! "This isn't right..."

'The Baltimore Bullet' was a really great movie. Not Great like 'The Hustler' but very, very funny.

I am pretty sure that movie was never made.
I almost feel like we need a Sticky thread about that movie, and the fact that it has never been made.;-)

i dont see how the majority thinks that poolhall junkies was worst than stickmen. OK it is probably not as good as the color of money and the hustler...but stickmen? that was one of the worst movies i have seen, and poolhall junkies wasnt that bad at all IMO

Walken is great at telling philosophical stories in movies , like the watch scene in Pulp Fiction, why cant we have a pool movie that good, something realistic. all the confrontations anf action knocking in Junkies never happens in any pool room, if action is knocked its done done outside or later on, Steiger did do one seen where he said "get your ass out there and see what you made of " or something to that effect-thats a real situation a stake horse might say, but walking up to a game and telling a guy to stop playing etc is so fake, and the hair in that movie who the hell has hair like that? its like 6" inches tall even Walkens hair was a joke.

Laurie Franklin of South West cues said they were have the guy say"give me the South West cue" in the final scene where he uses a SW, but they changed their minds and hung the banner in the pool hall that was in alot of scenes.

Baltimore Bullet

Need a new pool movie based on "Off the Rail". I just ordered BB and cant believe some vendors are charging $25 and up for this 1980 video. At least it is still available.

I have two words to make a blockbuster "THE MAGICIAN" a pinoy legend.... I bet the title alone would be worth a billion... lol

My favorite movie was COM, but the hustler is also a good one, the rest well, either I havent watched them or I didnt like them. I do want to watch the Baltimore Bullet (if I can find it)

SPINDOKTOR

Pool Hall Junkies really takes the prize for "All Time Awful Pool Movie" ... I made the mistake of buying it on eBay for $3.99 last year ... Watched it (painfully) and realized that a new world record had been set ... The "F-word" was used more times than in Scarface ... I did, however, put the DVD to good use at the Shooting Range ...

Please, somebody, put together a Pool Movie that rivals the likes of "The Hustler" and "Color of Money" ... The talent is out there ... Use it ...

is it?

Kiss Shot
'cause I was in it.

Hey Jack, is this the movie with Whoopie Goldberg in it? I liked the movie, but only got to see it once and am not sure on the name...but I think this is it. She played a "hustler" so to speak, cause who wouldn't play a girl wanting to gamble? lol I know I'd have tried her also

I liked Carambola. It's in spanish and is about 3-cushion mostly. Has pretty good cinematography, great acting, good billiards, sexy mamas, drugs, violence, and drama. What else is there??

haven't seen one of those talc dispensers for a long time

I forgot about that music video. I haven't seen one of those talc
dispensers for a long time. Thanks for the link.

There's also a little pool (or maybe snooker) footage in "The Who"
or Pete Townsend's video of "Rough Boys". I looked for it, but it
is not on youtube. I believe there was a great masse' shot it in. I
remember he was playing guitar and kept bumping into a guy that
was trying to shoot a shot. Anyway...
