Good shaft sealer

I am looking for a good sealer for my maple shafts. The small little bottles billiard supply places sell are to small and expensive.

Are any of you aware of a good shaft sealer that can be bought at a hard ware store or paint store, Home Depot, etc.?

I sure don't know what the best thing is these days ... but .... LOL, 45 - 50 years ago the hot setup was lighter fluid. no pun intended. :)

Sometimes to slick the shaft after sealing (which I use Kiwi neutral shoe polish for) I use Biosilk. It's a hair product. I can't tell the difference between it and Q Slick or Q Silk or whatever it's branded as.

That's what I use, but I think you get better results if the shaft is spinning fast....

I wouldn't use anything but wax on a LD shaft....................

If you want it in bulk, a big can, for example, just look for sanding sealer. Sherwin Williams makes one, but there are others as well. Adding a little bit of lacquer thinner makes it quicker drying, easier to work with.

All the best,

Thanks guys

Thanks for the info guys. I use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and denatured alchohol for cleaning the shafts followed by a light sanding with 2,000 grit sand paper then burnish with leather. I picked up a plant based wood conditioner called "Method" last night at Home Depot and am trying it on a shaft now. Less then 6 bucks for a 12 oz. bottle.

I am having mixed thoughts on cue wax and might try living with out it.

I will decide on a shaft sealer and look for the biosilk product. Wiping my cue down with a micro fleece towel during long sessions and with a damp one after the session should help also.

I think I started getting lazy and neglecting my shafts after I started using a shooting glove.

Birchwood Casey Gun Stock Wax, is all I have used for years on all of my shafts. Carnuba, Bees Wax and Silicon. Cleans, Seals and Polishes all at the same time.

My shafts stay clean. Chalk dust does not penetrate my shafts.

I have solid and laminated shafts. I have an OB Classic shaft that when I bought it had a 12.5 mm tip with a conical taper. I didn't like it so I sanded a modified Pro Taper on it and sealed it with the Gun Stock Wax. I have been carrying that shaft with a beater cue around in my truck in an old box case for 3 years. The temperature changes from the Texas summer heat and the winter cold have had not effect on the shaft. It is as straight as the day I bought it.

There is a product intended for sailing that is fantastic - SailKote.

It is a "dry lubricant that makes sails, hulls, rigging, deck hardware, and anything that moves on your boat run smoother".

I've used a spray version on my cue for some time now. Spray on, let dry, slick as can be...repels blue chalk too.
