Good Unknowns

I don't want to blow anybodies action but I was wondering. What players can you think of that could beat a top pro in tournament play that most pool fans might not have heard of? It would seem like an upset to a fan but this "unknown" has been around awhile maybe regional tours etc. And is
known by the pros to be a strong player. Gabe Owen probably fell in to this catagory before the Open. What others can you think of? Chris Szuter has beat Double J a couple of times in tournaments. I think the Joss, FLA. Pro and to a lesser extent the Viking has elevated a lot of regional players games in the past couple of years. Just something to think about.

I was very impressed by Brian Jones at the carolinas open. He can play and could probably get action anywhere.

I can think of a few from my area! John Brumback, Frank Ruby, Joe Brown, Tommy Stephenson and Eric Durbin. They have all beat top pros in tournament play. Acie Elliot from W. VA is another who works a full time job and plays at pro level. They're out there, but most earn a living elsewhere!

Cue, where in WV is Acie Elliot located?

St. Louis area... Andy Quinn, Gary Lutman, and a few others that I'm drawing a blank on their names.
One other name (am told he's in Florida now)... Sammy Soto! Some of you older road players might know the name. He used to play around St. Louis.

Hey there's a name I haven't seen in a while. He came thru here about 9-10 years ago i think. A local bartender called me and said theres some guys here wanting to play some. Me and a friend went out and I played him about 6 hours at $20 a game and lost $200. About 3 days later we played again, same bet, and I lost $120 after about 5 hours. I wasn't playing my best but was breaking better than him and holding him off. My buddy beat him twice in the next 2 weeks out of about $2500.
As far as unknowns: Steve Oaks, Brian Groce, Brian Gregg, and Waldo. And occasionally I happen to beat someone I'm not supposed to. Sam

Some More.

Bill Skinner, Chuck Neilson, Niel Boris, Shane Vanboeing, Tony Piazza and David MonDragon All oldies except Shane ,but can play like the pros Shane Vanboeing is only about twenty He will be known one day. Tony may be well known. David MonDragon was the best player I've ever seen play.

Bobalou from Hard Times is the best player I've ever seen. And if you don't like money, play Hawaiian Jimmy.

Was talking to Peru Paul about Waldo. Short little conversation, but always interesting to see someones name up on the board.

Remember playing little tournaments down at Conleys?

Jack Hynes, Stevie Moore, Brian Groce, Eric Durbin, Marco Marquez, "Cowboy", "Cecil" Any player who comes to the United States for the first time. (i.e Ronnie Alcano, Marcus Chamet, Sander Tot, Lee Van Corteza, Johl Younger, Steve Knight, Antonio Lining)

Yea, good tournaments.

The first time I beat Mark Jarvis was at Conley's. Peru Paul is another guy who is somewhat unknown, and always a threat in any match. Sam

I was there I'm sure that day. Remember watching Jarvis cutting balls that were dead center on the end rail with the cue ball dead center on the other end before the tournament started. I was just one of Bill's local kids hanging around. Saw some good players come through though. You always seemed to play good there, Jr. Rodgers always seemed to hang around the top at the end of the day if my memory is correct. I play Paul from time to time for fun or something cheap if the mood strikes. He gets in the little 8 ball tournaments around the north part of this state quite a bit. Though a lot of the tournaments they won't let him play, which I think is a shame.

Are you thinking of Ricky Van Ume? AKA "Little Ricky"?

I think the Ellis brothers play out of Huntington. Might be wrong about that I'm sorta new to the area. I saw one of them play in Columbus a couple of years ago. At least then I didn't think he was pro speed but it was 5 or 6 years ago. I do agree with Cuesmith about Durbin and Broombeck though. I've wathed Broombeck play banks once and man can he fire'em.

There used to be a guy who played pool here years ago named Bobby Legg. I think one of his nicknames was Bobby Smallsteps. He played Nick Varner, Minnesota Fats and others and won pretty consistently. I remember watching him play one handed, which was a popular style of play over in Johnson City years ago. He never really played tournaments, just backroom games after the tournaments were over. The first time I ever saw a 100 dollar bill was at his house. He had some hustler in from out of town, and they were betting hundreds of dollars on games. This was back in the mid seventies. I believe he was actually on the Senior tour a few years back. Not sure what he is doing now.
