Good way to clean a Irish Linen wrap.

I know that this has been asked, but I did a search and could not find anything on it. I have a wrap that has the smell of smoke from league nights, and I am sure it has a little dirt on it too. Funny thing is I don't even grab on the wrap with my long reach, but I am sure if I saw a picture of the cue as new I would probably notice it was claner then.
 
Good luck with that.. LOL I tried to clean mine with a damp cloth, and that went over poorly.. Ended up causing so many problems (fuzzys etc.. ) that I had to almost have the cue rewrapped.

I tried those wet disposible naking things on the wrap of my break cue, it didn't seem to have an adverse effect on the cloth. I'm not sure how effective it was, but there was a noticeable difference.

Sorry to hear that league night shooters smell so bad.

Here is my ***OFFICIAL*** how to clean your Irish Linen wrap post;

Pull up a chair and listen. All you need is a clean cloth, mild detergent (something like baby shampoo) fabric shaver, and water.

I put a little bit of water to moisten the cloth, then put just a few drops of the baby shampoo, and wipe away that league night grime consisting of smoke ,beer, whiskey, wing sauce, etc. out of that wrap!

Then use another clean rag or another area of the rag and clean off the wrap with clean water. Again, not too much water. After the wrap dries, the wrap will feel coarse, and some pills of linen and fuzz will likely to have pulled up. Use the fabric shaver to remove them.

Then your ready to take it to your league opponents who gunked up your wrap. Good luck!
 
Use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Sponge. A friend of mine cleaned 10 years of dirt and grime off of his Huebler and it came out looking brand new. That was six months ago and there were no adverse effects.

Ive always used regular alcohol to clean mine. Water always seems to pull up the nap... and make it fuzzy. this is very irritating.

I bought some 91% or whatever (the red bottle) alcohol, and used a paper towel, and twisted it around the wrap. Cleans it well, i dont know what it does as far as dirt goes.. ive yet to test it on my white irish linen.

I figure that if i do a light mixture (maybe 7:1) of alcohol and bleach, it will have my white irish linen lookin good!

But try the rubbing alcohol, if anything it just wont do much, i dont believe it has any adverse effects, i did it for a year with my black irish linen.

I use the Quick Clean table cleaner to clean mine. I just fome it on to a rag and wipe it over my wrap and then take a peice of cardboard and kind of burnish it. This stuff works geate and it dosent have a smell to it. I get a lot of smoke smell on mine from playing in so meny bars but this stuff takes all of that out also. I know people use this on there shaft, but on the wrap as well?
 
Another quick and easy way.... Take a wash cloth and VERY lightly dampen with water and or fabreeze and wipe the wrap down. Let it dry well, then take a piece of wax paper and "burnish" the wrap (wax side on wrap of course).
After that take a sheet of white typing paper or notebook paper and repeat the burnishing (this will remove the extra wax and help polish the wrap).

How to clean Irish linen wrap.

I'm feeling a little nauseous reading about all the chemicals people are putting on their cues (especially the alchohol and bleach)!!

Every cue maker I have spoken to over the years have all told me the same thing, and here it is:

Use a warm damp cloth (water only, and only damp not wet). Go over your wrap as many times as necessary to come away with a clean cloth.

Let it dry well, the wrap will be coarse to the touch, you then use a thick glass/coffee mug and rub the wrap rapidly to "burnish" it. Use thick glass because you DO NOT want it breaking in your hand. You have to rub hard and fast to get the job done and it will take a while so get comfy. When you're done your wrap will look like new and more importantly will be able to do the job it's supposed to, which is absorb oil and moisture.

This is the best method for a couple of reasons:
1) Chemicals (no matter how mild) can ruin a wrap and possibly damage the finish on the cue itself.

2) The purpose of a wrap is to absorb oil and moisture, using chemicals and wax will interfere with that function.

I've been using this method on all the cues I've owned for about 15 years and it has never failed me and more importantly, never damaged my wrap/cue.

Yes, it was an experiment. My friend was going to have his cue re-wrapped anyway and thought that it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. He never did get the cue rewrapped because the original wrap looked brand new.

I use Blue Coral Dri-Clean on my linen wraps. I get a couple of clean white terry washcloths and spray a small amount of the foam onto one of the clothsm and use it to clean the wrap. I go over it with the other clean dry cloth, and finish by getting some paper from an ordinary paper sack and burnishing the wrap.

I make sure I go with the "grain" of the wrap working my way along the length from top to bottom. Works well for me and it gets rid of smoke odors.

If the smell is really bad put the butt into a plastic storage container spray a few shots of Ozium into the container and place the lid on tightly. Keep it there overnite, and the smell will be gone when you remove it.

Blue Coral Dri Clean and Ozium are usually available at auto supply stores.
 
Cleans butts and wraps

This may not appeal to everyone but I have found out over the last few months that baby wipes are a magical thing. This is a 4 step deal but it is pretty quick.
1. Use aforementioned baby wipe and rub lightly going with the grain of the wrap. Do not saturate.
2. Use lightly damp cloth and repeat step 1. Then let dry.
3. Use small piece of wax paper and burnish wrap (does not take long)
4. Burnish with paper towel or newspaper.

I clean mine fairly regularly using this method and my wrap looks and feels like new.

The wipes also work fairly well for removing shaft blueing.

I've been using 90+ proof alcohol for over 6 years and wraps look new. I put it in a small spray bottle that has a fine mist and spray it on a Viva or Tough Job paper towel. It cleans and evaporates quickly. Learned that one from a custom cuemaker. It works incredible for cleaning shafts as well. Just a real light spray on the paper towel and then rub up and down briskly. The alcohol evaporates quickly and as you keep rubbing you are actually burnishing the shaft at the same time.

Some good suggestions without reading all posts. Remember the wrap was put on in a direction. When you clean the wrap, whatever method, remember to clean it in the direction it was wrapped. Usually that is in a clockwise motion starting at the front. Lathes are generally left to right and a wrap goes from the small end to the big end.

Having said that, I clean my wrap with denatured alcohol. It cuts soaked in hand oils, chalk etc. and evaporates fairly fast. No harm to finish.

When you turn the cue, even if by hand you'll notice a lot of resistance going the wrong direction. Your going against the grain, or wrap direction. STOP. Done right there is little resistance plus since it's not water and (your going the right direction) you won't get the fuzzies. Water, no matter how light, soaks in and swells any water soluable material. Alcohol evaproates fast = less swelling and far less fuzzies. Remember a big key is direction.

I clean my wrap once in a while. Its never a problem.
