Google Adsense

It seems like everyone on Earth with a website is trying to make money by showing ads on their website. The most common is Google Adsense. To keep it billiard related - your favorite forum has them too at the bottom of this page. And this isn't a knock on anyone trying to make money this way. I just wonder how effective it really is.

This is where ads are presented based on whatever the subject or content is on the page where the ads are to be seen. For example, if the word cues appears on the page you are reading then one of the ads might be for pool cues or acting lessons (how to take cues).

I am not looking to use AdSense to push any advertising.

My question is do any of you EVER actually click on any of these ads??? I rarely look at them much less am inclined to ever click on them.

Look at the bottom of this page. See the four ads displayed there? I find it funny sometimes when I read the topics of the ads and I can imagine Google's program trying to decide what the most relevant ads are to display.

But other than the occasional humor of meaning do you ever think about clicking on them or have you? I can't remember if I have ever clicked on an AdSense advertisiment. Sure I click on the "Sponsored Links" in the search engines IF they seem to be relevant to the topic I am searching for. But I have never been "inspired" to click on an unwanted ad like these.

Thoughts.......

No I can't say I have ever clicked on them lol, I actually have an adblocker for Firefox called Adblock Plus, it's an ad-on to the browser...

I actually forget there are ads on websites anymore, I have only had this for about a week and I haven't seen ads since

P.S. I do click on banner ads if they are interesting and non-intrusive. I hate the rollover ads that popup when you accidentally move your mouse over the smaller box and then don't go away until you click on the "close" option - AFTER you hunt for it.

I realize that a lot of "free" service is supported by advertising. So I support back when I can through clicking on the ads I find to be interesting. I have formed a few business relationships by clicking on Banner Ads in AZ.

Hey Mike - If you are reading this - it would be a GOOD IDEA and helpful to your visitors and your advertisers if you put a text link just below the banner ads that takes the visitor to a page where ALL the advertisers are shown on one page. Sometimes I see an interesting banner ad and intend to go back to it but it's gone and I have to sit around and hit the refresh button until it comes around. It would much better if there were one place to go to to see them all and choose what you want. You could even OFFER a caption to the advertisers to allow them a little more space to pitch themselves.

John,
My guess, on a forum, which is usually low clickers for ads, with the placement at the bottom of the page, the click through rate is probably under 0.3%

The banner ads at the top probably do a bit better.

I used to have adsense ads on all my pages (I have well over a hundred web pages). I thought it might help my google ranking. Since it didn't, I eliminated them from all the pages except a few of my oldest pages that are on my isp's server and aren't attached to my domain. It was never a big money maker for me. At best, I used to get a check every other month. I used to split it with my wife and drop her off at the mall on my way to the poolroom. If you're selling something on your site, why divert potential buyers to one of the adsense advertisers, especially, is you're only going to get a few cents per click?

John, this is my opinion. I just do not thing internet ads are very effective. I never go to them except by accident. I've always believe that the hard print publisher model was an absolutely terrible business model for websites. With a magazine people make a commitment to reading an article and really have to look at the ads and the advertisers really have the art of capturing readers attention well honed. The internet is not like that at all, I feel most people just blow a website off if the ads interfer, there is always another website to go to.
To me the only web business models that work are subscriptions, or replacements for brick & mortar retail stores. That's it.
That's why in my opinion the stock market took that huge adjustment years ago. Investors realized the web was a terrible place to make money, it's not tv, radio, or a publication. Google's bubble will burst ultimately, just like everyone else's did.
Back on point, I think internet advertising is a poor way to advertise.
Good luck.

I click on 3 ad banners a year, no more no less. :p

John, they bring in a small amount of money and they are not very intrusive. Trust me, they are not going to ever be the downpayment on a Jaguar, but they bring in a little.

The adsense people at Google that I have talked to have tried to get me to make some changes to their placement, but I am very concerned with them being too intrusive.

Oh, I don't think the ones on this forum are intrusive at all. I notice them sometimes and the topics are sometimes funny that's all. I guess if they do bring in some money then some folks must be clicking on them and that was my question.

Now, how about that all-advertisers page? Don't you think that would be a good idea for your users and the advertisers as well. Here's a bribe. If you do it then I will place at least one banner ad for a year on the forum.

See ya.

that ad block plus is the shiznit...i to got it about a week ago and havent seen a ad since, its actually kinda weird to look a the top right of the screen and have it totally blank:eek:

I never click ads on purpose. (well except if it really really really catches my attention)

I have asked on the support forums for the software I use about a feature like that and they say that it has not been done.

I am thinking I might have to code up a page by hand to handle it.
