Great Handicap 9-ball format at Sharks in Appleton,wi

I played in one of the best handicap 9 Ball tournys I've ever played in. i'm sure that other tournys have been handicapped like this but it was the first one I had experienced for myself.

Masters go to 9 with a $40 entry fee
AA go to 7 with a $30 entry fee
A go to 5 with a $20 entry fee

I heard before the tourny that it was going to be alternating breaks also but that got changed the day of the tourny to winner breaks. Alternating breaks would be a little tough seeing that the games were already spotted and the money also was being spotted.

The 9 ball on the break also did not count in the 2 footrail pockets.

They also had a great calcutta.

There were 2 open bids that went for a little over $200. But with 56 players there was a pretty good sized calcutta.

What really impressed me with this tournament at Sharks club in Appleton Wisconsin is how smoothly this went and with very few complaints if none.

The A players and below were getting a great spot from the AA's and the Masters. If they practice alot the week of the tourny they could be a huge factor in the outcome and there was a few that did just that.

The AA are already close to the Masters. If they play a good match they are capable of beating any master player at anytime. And again if they practice extra during the week they can step up another level real easy.

And the Masters had to like the winner break format. if they get behind, which happened alot in this tourny, they had a chance to make a comeback if they could put some racks together. But they would have to play well to win. And that's the way it should be.

All in all Mitch the owner of Sharks Club in Appleton had and ran a great tourny. with this format any poolroom shouldn't have trouble filling it up. It also helps to have players like John Fields and a few others spreading the word for weeks ahead.

What I really liked about this tournament is it gave some of the A players like Jeff Martin and James Clemente to go deep with the Master players and the AA players. They were right in the hunt finishing forth and fifth.

And being in the master part of it myself I still feel that the master player still had the best of it but only if they played to their full capability. But if the A player or AA player stepped it up a little it sure put on the heat.

It really would have been fun to see a tourny like this be streamed. And it would have been great to show the other rooms how successful this was overall.

First place was $1270.00 with calcutta
Second $950.00 with calcutta
Third $600.00 with calcutta
Fouth $300.00 with calcutta
Fifth $175.00
Sixth $175.00
7th $100.00
8th $100.00
$25
$25
$25
$25

It's tournaments like this that will really fill up the poolrooms.

And in a tourny like this you don't need champions to make it competitive because the spot turns everyone into a champion here and there during the tourny. You never know when someone will step it up a little and knock out who.

I really think the game spot with the money spot worked really well.

I think more of these around the country would be good for pool.

Have a great day geno..............
PS Thanks Sharks Club and Mitch for a great tourny for everyone.
Forgot to mention. There were no green fees or quarters to pay. Open Tables.

I'll be heading south here soon. Heading to Texas to do a little video work with Big truck. He's by far one of the best in the business.

Gonna be a great trip. Maybe I'll run into you.

Have a great day geno.....

Thanks for the Info Gene! I'd love to give that tournament a try sometime when I'm home visiting the 'rents.

The Desert Classic Tour here in AZ handicaps both the Race and the Entry fee. And they do it for all events.

Unfortunately for us though, Calcutta's are highly illegal here. Booooo!!!

Hope things are well and you are staying out from under any large vehicles.

I didn't know that?

Hi there Jerry,
In july of 2009 when I was there it was just a race to 9 for everyone in the one Desert event that I played in. When did they start handicapping them all.

I agree, Geno... the tournament ran great. I specifically went to this tournament hoping to shoot the Masters; LJ, Volkman, Marquardt, or you, at some point in the tournament. I wound up getting the oppurtunity to shoot Volkman, Marquardt, and you. I couldn't be happier with taking 4th. Although I DO wish you and I would have just shot on Saturday night since I drove three hours round-trip back on Sunday to watch you nearly run a 9-pack on me lol. Great shooting, and congrats on first place. Thanks again helping me brush up on my Perfect Aim.

I heard about you before our match........

Hi there Jeff,
The best compliment you can get in a tourny like this is that your rated too low. I had already heard before our match how you beat this guy and beat that guy. I never saw any of the matches but you beat alot of good players.

With 56 players you had to beat quite a few. I knew that when we played if you ever got rolling i probably wouldn't like it and I think I was right. I was very fortuanate that I hit a gear on Sunday starting with our match.

Sorry you had to make that drive. if I would have talked to you Sat night I would have said let's do it now. That would have been fine with me.

Somehow I got a feeling that if I didn't stop you I think you would have won this thing. You were playing much better than they thought you could.
Once you told me you were a Perfect aim customer I knew the rest of the story. Keep at it my friend. Your definitely on the right track obviously.

Hopefully the next time we meet we can talk a little more pool and I can see if I can add something to what you already know.

Maybe I'll see you this weekend at the Varsity Club $1000 added 8 ball tourny. I might still be here.

Good Luck and keep shooting straight.

thanks again geno........

Hey gene,

Stop by my place on your way South. You know the address. We can hit some.

I'll also be jacking up a three story house for repairs. I could use your help. :grin-square:

Best,
Mike

Hi there Jerry,

Yeah, they changed the format in 2010 to handicap both the race and the entry. In 2010, numbers were really big, pulling in 50+ at every stop, but for whatever reason in 2011, the numbers are low.

The finale is this weekend from Bullshooters for Big Table 10 Ball, they will be streaming live at http://www.desertclassictour.com/videos.html

Starts Friday Night for 1 or 2 rounds, then picks up on Saturday.

Any Wisconsin Tournaments over the Holidays? I'll be in Wisco from Dec. 18th through the 3rd. I know I'll miss the Oconomowoc tourney (like always).

That was a funny one............

Hi there Mike,
i might just do that.

Just for the record though. I dropped my fork under the table at the restuarant. It stayed there. I don't even go under tables anymore. I used my spoon:p.

dam i wish pool was like this around me ...

Who ended up in the top 3? Sounded like a good tournament.

Stuckart - if you're up for some cheap practice in Milwaukee, pm me. I think you're out of luck for tourneys, since the weekends fall on Xmas and New Years this year.

Sounds good! I'll be staying in the Hartford Area and GB Area while home.
