I played in one of the best handicap 9 Ball tournys I've ever played in. i'm sure that other tournys have been handicapped like this but it was the first one I had experienced for myself.
Masters go to 9 with a $40 entry fee
AA go to 7 with a $30 entry fee
A go to 5 with a $20 entry fee
I heard before the tourny that it was going to be alternating breaks also but that got changed the day of the tourny to winner breaks. Alternating breaks would be a little tough seeing that the games were already spotted and the money also was being spotted.
The 9 ball on the break also did not count in the 2 footrail pockets.
They also had a great calcutta.
There were 2 open bids that went for a little over $200. But with 56 players there was a pretty good sized calcutta.
What really impressed me with this tournament at Sharks club in Appleton Wisconsin is how smoothly this went and with very few complaints if none.
The A players and below were getting a great spot from the AA's and the Masters. If they practice alot the week of the tourny they could be a huge factor in the outcome and there was a few that did just that.
The AA are already close to the Masters. If they play a good match they are capable of beating any master player at anytime. And again if they practice extra during the week they can step up another level real easy.
And the Masters had to like the winner break format. if they get behind, which happened alot in this tourny, they had a chance to make a comeback if they could put some racks together. But they would have to play well to win. And that's the way it should be.
All in all Mitch the owner of Sharks Club in Appleton had and ran a great tourny. with this format any poolroom shouldn't have trouble filling it up. It also helps to have players like John Fields and a few others spreading the word for weeks ahead.
What I really liked about this tournament is it gave some of the A players like Jeff Martin and James Clemente to go deep with the Master players and the AA players. They were right in the hunt finishing forth and fifth.
And being in the master part of it myself I still feel that the master player still had the best of it but only if they played to their full capability. But if the A player or AA player stepped it up a little it sure put on the heat.
It really would have been fun to see a tourny like this be streamed. And it would have been great to show the other rooms how successful this was overall.
First place was $1270.00 with calcutta
Second $950.00 with calcutta
Third $600.00 with calcutta
Fouth $300.00 with calcutta
Fifth $175.00
Sixth $175.00
7th $100.00
8th $100.00
$25
$25
$25
$25
It's tournaments like this that will really fill up the poolrooms.
And in a tourny like this you don't need champions to make it competitive because the spot turns everyone into a champion here and there during the tourny. You never know when someone will step it up a little and knock out who.
I really think the game spot with the money spot worked really well.
I think more of these around the country would be good for pool.
Have a great day geno..............
PS Thanks Sharks Club and Mitch for a great tourny for everyone.
Forgot to mention. There were no green fees or quarters to pay. Open Tables.
