Greatness

I suppose everyone enjoys a close match/fight/championship and I am no different.
However, I probably most enjoy what some might consider boring now and then, and
that is someone who is absolutely the best at what they do.

There aren't that many sports that I enjoy watching, cuesports obviously and motorsports.
In those sports I feel very lucky to have been able to see the absolute best do what they do best.

My favorites:

Pool - Efren Reyes
Snooker - Ronnie O'Sullivan
WRC - Sebastian Loeb
F1 - Michael Schumacher
MotoGP/500cc - Valentino Rossi

If I had to pick just one it would have to be watching Ronnie in top form. I have read on this
forum many times that nobody plays their sport better then Efren plays his but I respectfully disagree.

If you have reached a certain level of playing and have played some snooker you cannot be
anything but absolutely amazed at what Ronnie can do, absolute genius at work.

For me personally, watching Valentino is a close second, I remember a wet race at Assen
where he was 4 seconds a lap faster then anyone else for several laps in a row.

Would like to hear what your favorites are in our sport or others.

Man, you just listed two that's hard to argue...I'd have to agree and you made my day bringing up Valentino.

I'm also a big boxing fan but no one has been that dominant against all available contenders like Ronnie or Rossi have been in their sports in some time.

I opened this thread expecting to see my picture, but man was I ever disappointed. Maybe next time and even if its not there I guess one could keep dreaming.

I'd suggest that the most dominant player in their sport in recent times is Serena Williams, whose match record in grand slam events is an almost unfathomable 259-39. That means she won 87% of her matches in grand slam competition. Wow!

Serena is a great example of someone not only being the best at what they do (like Ronnie) but also the most dominant.
Nobody can argue that Ronnie has been more succesfull than Stephen Hendry because he simply hasn't.

But, Ronnie's win-loss record against Hendry is 30-21 in Ronnie's favor and even Stephen will
admit Ronnie in top gear is the best that ever played.

Again, Serena is both the best and most dominant so a great example. I am not much into women's tennis though.

Phil "The Power" Taylor has to be one of the most dominant champions in any sport...

Darts of course is not everyone's cup of tea :)

For me it would be

Jeremy McGrath-Supercross
7 championships (missed the 8th one by 2 points) 72 main event wins. The smoothest rider I have ever seen.

Efren-pool
He has to be one of the best to ever grace the table. The shot selection and execution is mind blowing how he does it shot after shot.

I could watch either one for hours and never be bored. Both were the best of their sports and very dominate for quite some time.

Jordan is the GOAT of GOATs. He is the standard of what "greatness" is measured. When people debate whether one is the GOAT of their respective sport, rhetoric such as "So-and-so is the Jordan of such-and-such" is usually found.

"Efren is the Jordan of pool."

"Tiger is the Jordan of golf." (At least was once considered so.)

"Serena is the Jordan of women's tennis."

etc..

I agree. Watching Ronnie is great, when he`s in stroke and has a good day, nothing beats that.

Snooker is pro, pool is amateur. No comparison between Ronnie and Reyes.

Phil Taylor has to be in there, as mentioned. Then you have freaks like messi and Ronaldo...

My favorite is this goat:

Goes well with:

I think once you've played snooker, you will never stop being confused when you watch O'Sullivan play at his best. It's like he's playing a different game than everyone else in the world. Here's a relatively recent video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1soXyYt0jk

I've played a lot of snooker and know from experience how tough it is, but it's really hard to watch this video and not be convinced that it's an easy game. So in games with cues and balls at least I put Ronnie on top, for being confusingly good.

You know this might be a history making event......but I agree with you 100% on this. You cannot compare pool players and snooker players. Its a whole different level of skill.

on the womans side serena is definitely one of the greatest although martina Navratilova gets my vote
but how can you not put roger federer as the greatest tennis player of all time
