They are what is know as reputation or "rep" The more boxes you have the more reputation points you have. Green boxes mean you have good rep Red boxes mean bad rep. Rep is added (or subtracted) by other forum members clicking the small blue box in the lower left hand corner of your post. You can be reped for any number of reasons. The location actually depends on what format you chose when signing up. Mine is in the upper right but you get the picture!
The green boxes actually mean nothing, as they don't reflect how much rep you have. Someone with 5 rep points will have half the boxes filled with light green boxes, while someone with 100 million rep points will have the same number of boxes filled.

What he said! The idea of rep is good, but now it is pretty pointless and has very little meaning, because most people don't use the system for what it was intended.

Rep points took on a life of their own on this site, the only place I know of it happening. I am at least equally respected on another site that has the rep system and I have been there for over ten years. The rep system has been in place with the new software for two or three years. I have a total of 10 points there, I have over 400 million rep points here in slightly more time and I am only somewhere in the top ten last I looked.
I went into a cafe this morning and offered them 400 million rep points for a cup of plain black coffee. The waitress gave me a strange look! Hussy didn't even want a million rep point tip . . .
