Are you sure they can't give away 3 spots:) Because Foldes and Van Boeing are both deserving of a spot. It should be a very hard fought battle between the two, and congratulations to Groce on winning his tour card!

Whoever loses will have my sympathies. Shane for playing his heart out in the winners bracket and string a 6 pack together. Also, for Foldes for nearly making it both qualifiers, but just one win away.

That was quite a match to watch. Groce had gotten up 8-4, and had the 9th game locked up but played a shot to the side pocket a bit too full and missed. That let Van Boening run out and get the next three games to get back up 8-8. The last two games were back-and-forth but Groce pulled'em out.

No, I took off not too long into the final match - had been there all day and needed to get OUTSIDE. :) The two of them seemed pretty evenly matched though - when I left, it was 1-1.

Congrats

Lets hear it for the SD Kid, sounds like it was a great match, All of your friends and family are very proud im sure. Wish you luck on the tour, i think you will be a very good rep for the ipt. Congrats again Shane for winning your ipt card.

This kid's got some special talent...what a comeback!

Hill-Hill Battle Goes to Van Boening

Sunday, January 29, 2006 - 5:59 p.m.

Shane Van Boening is the newest member of the International Pool Tour by virtue of his stunning hill-hill comeback victory over Vilmos Foldes of Hungary.

The 22-year-old from Sioux Falls, SD, didn’t start out the match too strong—after winning the first game, Foldes climbed to a 5-1 lead. Van Boening managed to put a few more games under his belt, but after a lengthy safety battle that saw him give ball in hand to his opponent, Foldes reached the hill 9-5.

Unfortunately for the Hungarian, he came up dry on his next break. And that was the last time he saw the table.

Van Boening was one of several players who earned a $5,000 bonus for breaking and running six consecutive racks in tournament play this weekend. With his killer break and getting position afterward every time, combined with his smooth shooting skills, he not only cleared that rack but broke and ran the next four in a row, recovering from a 9-5 deficit and winning the match.

“I feel good,” Van Boening said modestly after his match. “I had a comeback and beat him, and I ran four racks. I tried hard, and I feel good about it. I think I’m ready to play on the IPT. I’m very excited about it. I’ve been waiting awhile to get on it. My family grew up playing pool, and I’m sure they’ll be excited to hear about this.”

There are three qualifiers remaining for the IPT’s 2006 season. Click here to visit the schedule and enroll.

This was an incredible finish for Shane. It has been quite a while since there was so much drama in the Pool Room. Shane had nerves of steel and showed how a champion handles the difficult situations. I felt bad for Foldes as he also showed that he has what it takes.
Too bad they both couldn't receive a card, but that is what the competition is all about. Thanks to all that participated and gave us rail birds such a great weekend tournament.

Hi Bob,

You owe The Pool Room $1,000.00 for the VIP treatment you received.:)

Congratulations, Brian and Shane - you guys made it through a tough field and are now battle-hardened for the next IPT event. Vilmer Foldes must be the most dejected person on the planet. Two straight 3rd place finishes against a killer field and he walks away $2000 (plus expenses) stuck. If he doesn't qualify through the qualifiers, maybe KT can make him first alternate if someone drops out - sure looks like he belongs in the 150.
