Guess who showed up at Cadillac Island

Well, I went to the monthly $1000 added tourney that I always go to in Longview, WA and guess who showed up.

Rafael Martinez.

He is on the "A" side and will play Al Perez to advance to the last two winners. Al is playing pretty good right now, but I think his little nuts are gonna shrivel if you ask me. Al is my friend, but I also know that he has a lot of respect (aka fear) for his fellow countryman.

I just thought it was kinda weird for a player of his caliber to appear in a relatively small tourney like this one.

Bummer. The 2nd straight tourney in two consecutive weekends that I had to miss due to work. Had to work today Saturday and half day tomorrow. This'll make 21 straight days...and not be over until next weekend be for going to BCA nationals. Great timing for lots of time critical projects to be overseen. Gonna have to head to Oregon City to get some practice on the diamonds tomorrow. Good luck up there Micah. Give my regards to everyone.

Rafael showed up this past w/e in Everett, WA at Shotze's 9-ball tournament on the 8-footers. They had a full field of 64.

Rafael finished 3rd... having lost in the point match to Paul Potier... and then he lost to Eddie Mataya in the B-side champion match. Eddie is a local (south) Seattle-area player that was totally on his game this w/e.

Eddie went on to beat Paul in the Finals... 9-6, iirc... a huge feather in his cap!!

Yep, Eddie was on Mike and Danny's team in the BCA. He can play jam up! And he has that HUGE break...the hardest I have ever heard. That was why it was so surprising he was using a soft break in Vegas.

Rafael moved to Eastern WA (Spokane?) so we will be seeing him at every $1000 added or more tournament, I suspect.

Linda,
Spokane?? When you see him would you please tell him hi from Jackie Madden? I played with him at Hard Times --- little guy, has a monster break too, he told me he used to work carrying as much as 600 lbs - just unbelievable he could do that. I imagine he will visit McQ's tournaments in Spokane weekly, the Post Falls guys and MT players aren't going to be overjoyed since they go to Spokane to play the added money tournaments. Thanks.

I had the pleasure of watching Rafael play several years ago..at the now defunct Q street billiards in Springfield, Oregon. I knew none of the top names then. But man, I sure agree about the MONSTER break! Rafael got eliminated from that tourney by another (locally only) unknown named Rodney Morris. I recall overhearing a local say: "He beat Rafael? Who the hell is this guy?" :D The crazy thing? I didn't have a clue about the name players then...but at that place, some of the great names out there played, in "local" tournaments. I'm amazed that my admission price was zilch. Out of guilt, I bought food and drink. Even then, I knew I was watching damned high talent level...that if it were football, I'd be paying $200 for a nose bleed seat...for even poor University of Oregon Football...

Weird isn't it? Same location, some of the best players showed up for pool, admission free. In roughly the same location, one of the "also ran" college football teams played, and thousand$ forked over to be there.

Maybe it's marketing???

I certainly will, Jack. He does have a monster break, and he is very powerful...and flexible. He contorts his body in more ways to reach a shot than a gymnast!

I get a kick out of this picture. I ran a $5000 added tournament and Rafael won, edging out Mike Vidas. Stan took 3rd. For being the champion, he sure didn't look happy!

GO Eddie! I like to play with him. I was surprised he didn't do better at the Nite Hawk Tournament, but that is a tough one also. I am glad to see him pull down that big win over Rafael. Eddie is one of the strongest shortstops in the NW I believe, along with Jessie Allred.

Linda... what I heard at Shotze's last w/e is that Rafael is looking at the Yakima area for a job/nest. Don't recall who told me that... but they told me that he was asking for some help in finding a job over there. Why Yakima (?)... I have no idea... but that's what the scuttlebutt was last w/e.... fwiw.

Thanks Dave. Mike told me Yakima too when he read this. Got too busy to go back and correct it. Did you shoot in Shotze's? How did you and Jeffy do?
