Just finished watching the replay of the guinness asian 9-ball tour and it was a total shut-out of the filipinos by the taiwanese! chang won 2 legs as well as the finale while yang won three legs. what happened to the vaunted filipino dominance? are the taiwanese really the new kings of asian (if not the world) pool?

Unfortunately the top 2 Filipino masters aren't there. If that were sponsored by San Miguel, they'll surely head the invasion:rolleyes:

While the Taiwanese players played great for the entire 2007 tour, I would not exactly consider the Guinness tour as the defining criteria to determine who is currently the best in the world or even in Asia. A lot of top pool players in the world are missing and there are also a numer of players there that are not at par with the best in the world. Also, you only have to win 5 or 6 games to be the champion. Now compare that to the IPT, WPC, etc. It is like comparing apples to oranges. IMHO, the Taiwanese players have to prove first that they can win consistently outside Asia. For example, it took Wu a couple of tries before he could qualify for the IPT. He eventually made it after the 3rd time but in Asia. Yang was here in the US recently and he lost in the first match. Kuo and Hsia played outside Asia too but were they even remotely successful in winning even one tournament?

This is not to take away the fact that the Taiwanese performed excellent in the Guinness Tour but to conclude that they are currently the best in the world is somewhat premature. Efren and Django did not join. Alcano did not perform as expected. It might be because he was distracted due to his pending rape charges filed by his own daughter. Dennis Orcullo and Alex Pagulayan only joined one segment, etc. Congrats to the Taiwanese though for the well deserved wins.

Not to make excuses but the taiwanese send their all star team..Im sure if we did the same it wouldve been a better challenge for them..

Also it seems that the Filipino team of "invitees" was rotated around a lot making it hard for any of them to win against a roster of Taiwanese that stays constant.

You can't be best in the world until you have beaten the world. Until now only a few Taiwanese have done that. And NONE of them have done it to the level of Mr. Efren Reyes who has beaten the world at many disciplines over and over and over.

"Filipino dominance".

This reminds me of a topic. :D

True, but remember that the Taiwanese have not traveled all that much until recently. The Filipino's were not a powerhouse the world over until they started traveling the world over. Once "The Invasion" started in the 1980's, yea, THEN they started to win more and more.

The Taiwanese are on the same curve now. They will only get stronger, better and, with that, win more often. I wouldn't bet against them.

Now THAT's a scary thought!

And over for many years, not just once or twice. Efren was beating the world when Siegal was playing good and he has been a dinosaur for over a decade.

Partially politics. There are now 3 major promoters/sponsors in the Philippines, Negros, Bugsy, and Puyat. It used to be Filipino pool revolved around Puyat Sports top guns, Efren, Bustamante and Alex. With Lee Van Corteza good showing this year, Negros's players are now getting top consideration. However the Negros stable still needs a lot more experience. Alcano and Orcollo did the same thing for Bugsy. Eventhough Alcano and Orcollo are great players, they are fairly new to the international scene.

Don't be surprised to see more of the lesser known Filipino players representing Philippines. South East Asian Games will feature some of these new comers.

Filipino players were rotated instead of fielding the same(and should have) 4 players in all the legs just like Taiwan.

It's kinda hard to guage things if Efren, Bustamante, Luat, Lining and Alex are missing in action.

Thanks for the info. Just curious...how do these arrangements work? I read before that Puyat does not get anything from the winnings of Reyes, et. al. Is it the same with Bugsy and Negros? I would think they get a little something for their troubles.....

I love sprite for always stirring up discussions :D nuff said... the Filipinos (and the other countries represented) were dominated in the Guinness 9BT 2007 by the Taiwanese ;) I would not be surprised if the same thing happens in WPC 2007.

I hope I get to see some Taiwanese players in the coming US Open 2007 coz I will be there... any inside info as to who will represent Taiwan by any chance?

In my opinion, taiwanese send their 3 top and 3 unknown player, but the Philippines send their all star team (except Efren and Bustamante) in 2007 Guinness Asian 9-ball. Not to mention Chang Jung-Lin, Wu Chia-Ching and Wu Yu-Lun are all still the students.

Your players in Asian 9-ball tours-

Jakarta, Indonesia

Jeffrey De Luna (PHI)
Dennis ORCOLLO (PHI)
Ronato ALCANO (PHI)
Lee Vann CORTEZA (PHI)

Kaohsiung, Taipei

Ronato Alcano (PHI)
Alex Pagulayan (PHI)
Antonio Lining (PHI)
Antonio Gabica (PHI)

Genting Highlands, Malaysia

ROBERTO GOMEZ (PHI)
RONATO ALCANO (PHI)
LEE VAN CORTEZA (PHI)
JEFFREY DE LUNA (PHI)

Singapore

MARLON MANALO (PHI)
ROBERTO GOMEZ (PHI)
RONATO ALCANO (PHI)
ALEX PAGULAYAN (PHI)

Shanghai, China

Roberto Gomez (PHI)
Jeffrey De Luna (PHI)
Lee Vann Corteza (PHI)
Ronato Alcano (PHI)

---------------------------------
RONATO ALCANO - the reigning 8&9 ball world champions
ALEX PAGULAYAN - the former 9 ball world champion
Lee Vann Corteza - the reigning Philippines champion
Antonio Gabica - the former Philippines champion
MARLON MANALO - one of your best player
Dennis ORCOLLO - Isn't he the best 9-ball player in the world ? (hehe...he just lost to Wu Chia-Ching in the BRUNEI 9-BALL INVT'L CUP)
Antonio Lining & ROBERTO GOMEZ - I think even the Filipinos themselves will admit they are both their top players.

Your other 2 top Filipino masters, only Efren was indeed great in this tour. As for Bustamante, he is also great, but his mental has never been strong enough to win the asian tour title in the past years. (In fact, I rememberred he only had one time to advance the final match but failed.)

It is indeed interesting, maybe the flipino players can play well outside Asia, but when they return to Asia, and everything seems to be different.

Guinness 9-ball Tournament is just one of the few tournaments. You forgot that there are Japan and Korean Opens where Filipinos did well. Asian Olympics is another one.

It just happened to be a different kind of beer, it probably wrecked havoc with their stomach. :D

They were dominating last year. A 3rd of final 32, I think 4 in final 8.
