i'm sure it couls work.aren't the new ones .625" shank?you could grind it flat on the edges and lock it in.i hear the new gun drills have the air on the bit anyway.the one i use has the air going into the holder.

leon, yes, we use one similar to this quick change holder in the pic...the bit has the air fed through back of it. works great....recommend wearing some ear protection, oh, so loud !!

THANKS FOR HELP THIS IS WHAT I HAD IN MIND I CAN RUN THE AIR LINE FITTING IN THE BACK OF THE DRILL.

I have mine set up that way... it works real well.
I put a valve between the back of the driver and the air fitting so I can adjust the airflow.
Heres a tip on centering your gundrill. (quick and easy)
drill a shallow hole (3/4" or so deep) and bore it to the size of your gundrill.
Put the gundrill in the tool holder and push the end into the hole you just made.
Loosen the compound slide, then line the back end up with your tailstock. Tighten the compound, lock the cross slide, then let 'er rip.

Yes, they make an Aloris type holder for that set up.
However, it is very hard (at least it is for me) to get the drill set up exactly on center and straight.

Thank you Sheldon for sharing your method of alignment ... I will give it a try.

To align the gun drill why dont you take your work piece and bore a hole to you gun drill size and use the pilot hole as a reference to get the gun drill on center.

Damn, why didn't I think of that? :D :D :D

The pilot hole has to be there if not the drill will chatter.
The drill has to start inside the wood.

That I could do but the rear end still needs to be in alignment with the front end. In other words the center line of the drill is dead on with the center line of the wood its drilling.
That is why Sheldon uses the tail stock ... to align the rear end and put the bit on the true center line.

I use the tailstock to align as one key point.

And also made a block bearing to fit my aligned center rest that I use for pin drilling operations. The bushing is 35 mm OD and fits the ball bearing in the center rest. Now we can use three points to align the drill bit and ensure support and boring accuracy. It is aligned with the center drilled and partially bored cue stock, the center rest guiding the long bit, and the tailstock used to align the back of the gundrill which is in an aloris type toolpost holder. I know it is all aligned right if I can move the bit smoothly through the center rest bushing and into the prebored hole in my wood that I wish to bore through . Maybe a bit overkill but cost almost nothing to set up if you already use the center rest method for pins and facing jobs.-------
