Gun drill vs arbor

Going to try to get some feed back on this so I will ask again

Looking to get my first gun drill.

I understand why many core the forearm at something smaller like .650 and the handle at .750.

I have also I have read some cuemakers say they core everything at .750 or .775. A bit thin at the end of the forearm (.840 - .850). It should still be ok right or is it too risky.

Thanks,
Scott
.760.
Gives you room for .750 holed rings.
Never cracked a .840 forearm..
I bore the bottom 6" at .825..

I core handles at a little over 7/8.
BTW, it.doesn't hurt to have a long boring bar.
5/8 minimum and up to 7" LOC

After doing a little more searching and reading I did settle back to the .760 which I just ordered from Sterling (very nice people). About a 4 week wait time.

I am still leery of the thinness of the forearm. I figure if I need to, I could stop short of the end and bore the top of the forearm smaller and step the core down, or eventually get another smaller gun drill when I can afford it. I will do some experiments first of course and see.

Currently I am working on some old full spliced conversions that only need the butt end cored so that is my immediate goal. Looking forward though, I also want to get some pieces cored and hung up for later builds.

Ready to make a mess!

Received my .760 gun drill from Sterling today. I also got a used .650 from J.C. So let’s see what happens. Thanks for the help everyone.
