Guns and Cues, Show us your Piece

i posted this in the non pool related... but i am pretty sure i am going to buy a AR soon.. i narrowed it down to Rhino Arms.. anybody have any experience with them? www.rhinoarms.com , in the 556 calibur.. they arent the cheapest of AR's , they are more on the expensive side.. but no where near what Nemo's cost.. let me know if you have one or know...

thanks..chris

Why not just build one?

I agree with this completely. A friend of mine built his AR for $600. He likes his and it's what he wanted. If the Rhino is what he wants though, he should get the Rhino. When buying guns I just get what I want no matter the price.

I wonder how many Pool player skills also translate over to precision shooting and vice versa? (see what I did there...)

I shot a great sight in at the Ft. Dix Range 14 this weekend. I was checking my 200 yd zero and scope tracking. I started with a 5 shot group in the middle target, clicked over to the upper left and shot a 5 shot group, then to the upper right- shot 10, then lower left-shot 10, then back to the middle and shot 10 more.

My first 5 were slightly loose, but still about 1 MOA. Same for the upper left. I tightened up the upper right, grouping around a 1/2 MOA and made a ragged hole in the lower right (with 2 shots that were slightly off).

75* day, low humidity
approx 4 MPH, 1/4 value wind
65gr Sierra
200 yds

Eric

That's some beautiful shooting. What's interesting is there is not one "flyer" in any of the groups.

Thx, Chris. To me, flyers in shooting are like misses in Pool- you can get a good run going but eventually, you're gonna have a miss or flyer. At 200 yds, using the 1 inch square boxes, the groups are about 1 MOA. Good shooting, for me. That's why guys that can truly shoot sub MOA are so badass...

Those groupings are definitely one of my good days. Like Pool, how often does anyone not named Shane put up a 4 pack in 10 ball?

This is my latest toy. POF P308 w/ 20" barrel (but soon going to swap it for a 14.5" barrel) with NP3 coating. The BCG of this thing is super slick and literally requires no lubrication. It takes 5 mins to clean this because you just give the NP3 a quick wipe and it's super clean.

It also has a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x MRAD scope and a Geissele Super Dynamic Enhanced Trigger.

I've been able to shoot sub-MOA with this thing, but the ballistics tests show that the 14.5" barrel was shooting .038" (low) to .500" (high) with Hornady 155gr TAP for 3-shot groups from an iron sled, which is why I'm swapping it. Obviously, there's a HUUUUUUGE difference from shooting prone w/ a bi-pod or even bench shooting w/ sandbags versus strapping it in an iron sled. Unlike Eric, I'm a totally shitty shooter without cheating w/ the sled or locking the thing down with a bi-pod and bags.

Shooting sub-MOA naturally is tough, even with top equipment. So, I'm pretty impressed w/ Eric's groupings. Since my THIRD back surgery in January, I haven't played much pool because I can't handle the discomfort I'm experiencing when getting into my "usual" stance. I've had to make a stance adjustment to be way more upright and I've found it's almost like rewinding my progress about 8 years.

Losing to people who I know I would never have lost to ever is just disheartening, so I took up precision shooting w/ ARs. I happened to pick an AR-10 platform out of the gate and now I'm fuggin' disheartened because I'm pumping out bullets that are $1.50/round... which is worse than losing to people who can't run 2 balls. So once I get the new 14.5" barrel installed and this thing is dialed-in, I'm gonna sit it in the closet until I figure out how to load my own.

If any AZers are in Central PA and load their own and want to give me some lessons, I'd love to trade for pivot-aiming lessons or I'll pay hourly for the knowledge.

Here's my Puşca Semiautomată cu Lunetă (PSL)

This is almost identical to the Dragunov Sniper Rifle, but all the parts are proprietary and non-interchangeable with the Dragunov. Mine has a 3-9x42 POSP scope, which is nowhere near enough to shoot precision at a long distance, but that's going to change if I can find a 24x side-mounted scope for this thing. They have adapters, but I don't trust those things. It shoots 7.62x54R rounds.

This is from yesterday's session:
2014_06_02_17_21_44.jpg

This is my first time shooting w/ the 9x scope (it comes with a 4x scope that's shit). Everything is in Russian, so it took me a while to sight it in. The blue area was my "guessing," and the yellow was my final 5 shots once I thought it was as good as I could get it (all from the sled, no ability here).

I've read on forums that this rifle isn't super accurate, but I'm not quite sure. I'm confident that it's capable of very very tight groups if I could see the target better (better than 9x).

I also have an LWRC, TAVOR, some cheapo bolt action 30-06 rifle that's way accurate, and a Ruger.

Finally, I have a 3000mW focusable blue hand-held laser:
laser123.jpg

^^^ This thing is basically a real-life light saber.

I heard these things are illegal but f-it, if the gov't has time to come after me, they're not spending enough time going after real criminals. It's technically a weapon and will instantly blind whoever you point it at, it's def not designed to point shit out during Powerpoint presentations. If a grizzly bear is coming at ya and you shoot it with a pistol, you might piss it off more (unless you have a great caliber/bullet). If you hit it in the face with this thing, it will wish it hadn't come at ya because everything would go all-white and then all-black for him visually while you set its hair on fire.

When you turn this on at night time, it's NOTHING short of impressive. I remember the first time I turned it on, a neighbor a few doors down screamed, "WTF IS THAT?!?!" It literally looks like a Star Wars light saber, except instead of the beam being a few feet long, it's miles long. In fact, I could stand at the front of Mandalay Bay Casino and shoot it to the top of the Stratosphere and if it doesn't blind anyone, people would think they were in an alien tractor beam.

I always get the question, "Why the F do you have that?"

Answer: You can start fires with it, cut/lase through shit, tremendous stopping power defensively-speaking and on a clear night, you can see the beam from outer space and it's just REALLY cool as long as you treat it with total respect and never point it at something other than the sky unless you're wearing safety glasses. If you're not careful, it can reflect back at ya and blind your dumb ass -- so you must treat it like a loaded weapon at all times.

Here's what it looked like when I shot it through some snow:

Not many guaranteeing 1/2 MOA. That's impressive. Never heard of them, but that doesn't mean shit since I'm only a few short months into this new hobby.

I went to the range a few weeks ago and asked a guy if he wanted to shoot at bullseyes for $5/shot and the guy looked at me like he saw a ghost. He said that he never heard of such a thing. He didn't even know that he prob couldn't lose since he had an elite-level AR-10 and hand-loads. I just wanted to compete.

This sport/hobby is INSANELY addicting. Unlike pool cues, these guns tend to hold their value pretty well.

Hey man, in the spirit of full disclosure, I shot my groupings from a bench, with a bi pod and rear sandbag. My groups came in around 2", which is 1 MOA at 200yds. While it's considered good (especially for me), it's not world class.

That laser is pretty sick. If I owned that, it would be my new favorite toy. I would have to take it to Yoda for some instruction.

All I know is the difference between shooting tight groups with a sled versus bipod versus nothing is an order of magnitude with each step.

Shit ain't easy (at least for me).

What do you know about those Rhino rifles? Been staring at those all day now.

I have no experience with Rhino Arms. Like another poster said, you are better off building your own. It aint that hard.

On a side note, we should meet at Ft Dix, NJ someday and punch some paper.

I'll PM ya the moment my new barrel is installed on my POF. How long is the range there? I've never shot it past 200yds but this Viper scope is begging for something longer.

Unfortunately, it's only 200 yds. To shoot longer, you need to belong to a private club or venture into the Lehigh Valley area of PA.

There is a club in south Jersey that has rifle to 600 yds, but they are closed to new members. I can go as a guest of a friend/member, but I cannot bring others.

It's a good ride, for me, unfortunately. Do you have any range recommendations? There are a couple of hte PA public ranges that go to 300 yds. I've only been to the one near Jim Thorpe.
