The last one I posted is the original wrap Gus put on it. Maybe I should contact him to swap it out?Perfection!
None of those old school cues should have a leather wrap
I've got a request if you get ahold of himThe last one I posted is the original wrap Gus put on it. Maybe I should contact him to swap it out?![]()
Sadly I never spoke to Gus. He was a great guy. I’ve heard so much about him over the years. He sure built amazing cues.I've got a request if you get ahold of him
Double black, mahogany, natural is so Gus.. with the maple / ebony stitch as well. It’s time for the Gus of the month pic again.
This months cue is one of my favorites. It ticks all the boxes and has fiddle back maple which isn’t very common for Gus.
Double blk veneers (early 70’s)
Original leather wrap
20 MOP inlays
Both original shafts
Maple windows

That’s a proper GusGus Szamboti.. first cuemaker I ever met in person. Of course being 13-14 years old, I hadn't a clue. I just knew he was considered the best. Almost everyone I met while traveling with my uncle had one. Of course when the rooms you go to are frequented by Hopkins, Mizerak, Martin, etc.. you are going to see the best. If you didn't have a Szam, you wanted one. I saw one get sold.. for a cool grand in 1983. They were $ 400 from him if that, and if he took your order. So, the premium prices were being paid way before TCOM and the pool boom. My uncle never waited more than 6 months, and Gus used to laugh and say George, you are never giving up your first cue. My uncles second cue is with a guy who was considered a very good player here in NJ, the third he sent to AZ to a guy named Eddie Brown and he never saw the cue or money again.Who would have guessed sending a Szam to a strung out junkie pool player would get you ripped off?!?!?!?

I can say this, Miz and Martin had the fanciest ones I had seen as a kid. Other than this one, the one I saw sell had the simple veneers over the butt cap. My uncles second cue was a rosewood four pointer. His fanciest was the one he sent to AZ, if had mitered windows and some wood trim rings, nothing over the top. I agree with you, the cues were made for action, fancy ones are very nice, but I can say this cue has seen some real money and tough action. That’s a proper Gus
The trophy cues are nice, but this cue is what it’s all about![]()
