Guys read this now...time matters.

Oh geeeeeeesh!

Humanity will continue to be held back as long as beliefs like this are held. Mental illness, whether caused by physiological problems, or psychological trauma, attributed to demons.. Nice.

Next, we'll be drilling into people's heads to "let the evil spirits out."

Russ

Is this really the thread to debate about religion? Fine if you disagree with what he said, and it was a bit over the top, but it's ridiculous to take what he said and then turn it into a soapbox for yourself to slam on religion and say beliefs like this are holding back humanity.

I thought it a perfectly reasonable and appropriate response.

(Russ's I mean)

It is clear that NBC hadn't thought of the consequences of showing such video and the danger it can instigate. this might motivate other people to do or copy a similar act of violence. these acts shouldn't be tolerated but rather kept under close check or behind closed doors. [...].

I think you're not being realistic. Sure there could be other nuts somehow prompted by this event. That is a risk we face.

But your cure is worse than the disease. Suppose they locked up the guys diatribe so we couldn't see it. Then the Fox-o-blogs speculate endlessly about its contents. And do you think they're going to speculate that the content is just angry ramblings of a disturbed young man?

No. They'd be speculating about how it is Muslim extremists, and it must contain threats of future attacks, and the liberal media--who are themselves in cahoots with the muslim extremists--don't want you to know blah blah blah...

Better to just see it, imo.

I dont agree with your "flood" nbc message. It's not going to stop anything. Im sure they are getting enough emails on they're own without your agenda...

I will agree that I find it pretty shitty that they decided to air these tapes. The best part is that the damn reporters their are saying the entire time "these videos are like a low blow to VT" and "its gotta be hard for the people to see the videos". This was being said on MSNBC last night as they were airing it. IF YOU DONT THINK THE PUBLIC SHOULD SEE IT< THEN DONT ****ING AIR IT.

Frankly, IMO, these videos need to be seen and the public has a right to see them. I also think it is good that they released the videos right away. This will make it part of the greiving process rather then waiting for a lot of people to just start to get over it, then bring it up all over again.

The vt killer was a sadistic ****er. Im glad he is dead and proved no point for his "cause" whatsoever other then he was psycho.

you clearly didn't get the point. the point is, is it necessary to play the whole video rather than editing it when it is already evident and common sense that most of the contents were that of insensible material. maybe you found sensibility in all the words that that psycho had said. so tell me, what was the explanation behind his rambling regarding the "JESUS CRUCIFY ME"? is there still what you call an speculation in that?

I'm being realistic alright, but your definition of realism states an awareness of people in general, to unwanted violence. there should be a degree to what as considered as acceptable material. to what is necessary and what is not. like for example, would you show your kids or the younger audience of beheading videos in Iraq? if this is what you call as reality, then there must me something wrong with you. No offense to NBC, but what are they trying to do is cherish the memory of a psychokiller, rather than giving respect to the ones who were killed by this person. If you had seen the movie "15 minutes", then maybe, just maybe, you will understand then.

Russ didn't say anything of the kind. Ignorant people are always blaming supernatural deities for things they can't/won't understand. Actually, the satan, etc., may have been sarcastic, I don't know nor do I care. YOU have now taken the thread to that level of being about religion. Truly religious, spiritual people would be caring more about the victims than trying to put a supernatural twist on a horrible incident.
Lets just drop the religion crap, shall we?

NBC has gotten footage of the mass killer at VT...it seems he mailed it to them between shoots. It also seems NBC would like him to spread his message after death. They see it as news(and ratings) and not fuel for other wingnuts.BUT THATS WHAT IT IS.

If you would like to deter them turn it off or change the channel.I find myself in an odd spot of calling for action, but I am.If this guy has a voice after death because he made the world wide news because he killed so many people, what do you think the next guy is going to do?Got Family?

TURN IT OFF.

And Email NBC.
FLOOD THEM.

I use a few message boards ( I assume we all do ) so what I ask is that you copy and post this where you can.
The people (us) need to fix this...for our own good we had better. NBC is letting him speak (in quotes for the minute I watched) as though his message is valid.

I'm sickened by it.We all should be.

This has absolutely nothing to do with billiards. There is another forum on here for such discussion. If I wanted to hear more about this shit, I could just turn on the tv on pretty much ANY CHANNEL. But yeah, lets all hate NBC even though any other one of the news media outlets would have done the same thing.

The more I think about it, we better shutdown the history channel also for airing documentaries on the Nazi's. We don't want to spread the voice of Hitler!

Basically, it's the news. If you can't handle it, don't watch it, and don't bring this crap on here. I'm already sick of hearing about it.

Mike,
I agree with you. Better for us to see it, and to think for ourselves than to make it the job of the media to filter it for our politically correct consumption.

To let the mainstream media be our filter for thought, given their track record of stupidity, dishonesty and bias would condemn society to childhood.

There could well be copy cat crimes, but having the media try to protect us and tell us what we ought to know, in order to prevent that is throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

In my opinion, this kid was a product of the education system in some ways. His hatred for the wealthy, for capitalism and his confusion over the role of religion are largely congruent to the messages propogated in the education system and in mainstream media. No doubt he was very confused about society and his role in it, as are many. What took him to the extreme I cannot fathom....was he on medication?...did he just have a peculiar mental disorder?

Such things we may understand better if more people can see the evidence and discuss the possibilities.

Sweep it under the carpet and the only history that will be told is the politically correct version.

Colin

Do I understand this to be an attempt to get a news outlet to censor themselves ? Do any feel that these news outlets should be subject to government regulation regarding these types of images and videos ? Just curious as to how far the freedom of the press should be allowed to go, since this thread seems to suggest that they are too free now.

Dave

I agree it's a freedom of the press situation. I think the videos should be shown. It allows people to see exactly what this guys motivations were. If people are crazy enough to be motivated by this person they are going to do it whether or not his videos are released.

Guys your kinda missing my point...And yes I know this has got nothing to do with pool...I was just trying to make people aware of the situation as it was breaking as I posted last night.

I don't care about this guys video.
I'm Very concerned about the decision to air it though. The only "news" here is that he sent it to em.Thats it.Thats all they needed to report imo and then just move it on to the authorities.

What does concern me (very much so) is the NEXT VIDEO.Thanks to this decision you can bet your sweet ass you'll see another one..much better done I'd imagine since the next wingnut is gonna know its gonna get seen by all....The ENTIRE WORLD if he kills enough people.

All he's gotta do is mail it and start killing...quite probably trying to best 32.

Sadly this is recurring theme in this country.I believe airing this guys message (however confusing it was) will fuel the already sad state of mass shootings we see all to much as it is...

Its not about filtering what I or others see...in this instance its about common sense imo.

I'm no prophet, but I believe I'm right about this happening again.I just hope I'm wrong.

I agree with you.........
1)there should be censorship what the media can air or not.the media is getting way out of hand with their freedom of press,it should be regulated to some what.
2)the gun laws are a joke,i can agree with the right to bare arms to a point BUT come on...its harder to get a drivers licence or fishing licence:eek: than it is to buy a gun at your friendly neiborhood gun store.

that's what I also said, common sense and responsible journalism. some people here didn't even get my point either. I already had given an example and given theirs. sadly they also overlooked their own examples. it's more like tolerating some 8 year olds to watch a porn flick just because of the belief that it is reality. what a viable argument that is.
what is also sad is that the media is tolerating this kind of violence in particular, which can contribute to future violence.

Efforts to tell the media how distasteful those videos are must be working. CNN said this morning they wouldn't air any of that guys videos anymore.

This was a great idea.

Did anybody else see the stills of this lunatic Cho and have flashbacks to the scene where deniro was in front of the mirror in taxi driver?

This guy was obviously suffering years of mental and social problems and it appears his parents' and teachers' inaction indeed played a part in setting the stage for this. I can't believe that what's being reported about what he did while at VT, didn't preempt them to put him on some kind of probabtion or suspension until he seriously sought the proper medical care he obviously needed.

As for the video, there's no right answer. Showing it this soon can be viewed as tacky, tasteless, and pure ratings-craving by the families of those affected, but sitting on it....and not showing the public at large such disturbing and telling images goes against what the press is there for. In my opinion, NBC's decision to air it was the most reasonable action given the unusual circumstances. They obviously did not choose for this depraved lunatic to mail it to them.

It makes no sense to say I made the thread about religion, when Russ was the first one to say that thinking the supernatural had something to do with things like this is going to limit the progress of humanity. The way you put it, I agree that it is ignorant to just claim the supernatural is responsible for so many things without good reason. The original poster said that the killer was possessed or at least obsessed with satan. I don't think so. Why could Russ not have responded that there is no reason to think this, rather than going on a tangent about how thinking anything like this is a detriment to humanity? Does Russ know for a fact that there is nobody with the appearance of mental illness who is not supernaturally afflicted? I don't know how he could know that. If not, then it makes no sense to completely outrule this possibility in every case. Again, I don't think this guy was possessed or anything like that but why not leave it at that rather than making a blanket statement?

I didn't consider it a blanket statement. I don't think others did, either.
