I played in the HT/Bellflower '1st Sunday' tournament for the first time in about 4 years. I've played twice since mid December. I had no expectations. It just felt good to play some. My only goal was to avoid complete embarassment. I almost got there.
Before the tournament started-I spoke with Al Romero-and ordered a 3c shaft for my playing cue. Al made recommendations and I said -OK.
I got more than my share of rolls in the first match-'won' 5-4.
Now the 'great day' part- I lost the next two matches 6-4 and 5-3. I lost to Max Eberle and Rafael Martinez. Where/when am I going to get to play these guys otherwise?? I sure am not matching up with them.
Against Max-I made two shots that will last me a long time. I told Max-All I got is 'wacky shots'-but then he had already seen that.
Rafael doesn't say much. The cue does plenty of talking. I thanked him for the beating-he nodded. I nodded back.
It was a great day. I saw a lot of 'head-nod' acquaintances and lost to two great players. My dead money was well spent.
I have no illusions-I play bad. But today I got to play bad against two champions.
I play for fun and have tremendous respect for that group of guys that know how to win-who are usually there at the end.
It was a very good day.
Oh yeah-kicked 3rails out of a safety by Max and got good-priceless.
That's my story.
