If you're going to ban jumping may as well ban masse's.
Going over a ball or around it, it's basically the same thing.
Hardly…..in the first instance, you cause the ball to leave the table to clear a obstructing object ball
that may have been intended to block you as a safety play by your opponent by leaving the CB in
that position. Balls can accidentally pop up off the table, like the cue ball on a break shot, but it is
not intentional and generally doesn’t damage the cloth. In golf, it used to be called a stymie but the
rules were modernized and courses avoided having the greens needlessly damaged jumping a ball.
A masse on the other hand is extreme spinning of the cue ball and spinning the cue ball is really just
extreme English driving the cue ball around the obstructing OB. But the CB never loses contact with
the cloth. A different shot than leaving the table but I’ll concede both can accomplish the same task.
Both are legal shots, unless tournament, or house rules, stipulate otherwise to protect the table cloth
which is expensive to start with & costly to install. It’s no wonder that both are generally frowned upon.
