Handicapped Tournament Question

Last night while playing in a handicap tourney the following incident occurred which led to a rather lengthy discussion. It's a ball spot tourney.

A high ranked player (11) was playing an (8) and giving him the call 6 out. The (11) kicked at a ball and missed but knocked in the 7 ball.

Here's the argument ....some people (me included) said that the 7 ball should be spotted and the reason was that the (11) should not benefit from fouling by keeping his opponent's spot ball off the table.

Some people said they disagreed that any ball made on a foul should stay down...

I'll let you know what the tournament director determined ...after you guys chime in ...

So, has anyone run into this before..what should the rule be?!?

Thanks in advance guys...

IMO, any ball that is not the main game ball (the 9) that goes down, stays down. The lower handicapped player now has ball in hand as his advantage anyway.

The weight balls spot on a foul. If it was an even game then it would stay down,

All depends on the tournament rules, which can differ a WHOLE LOT from place to place.

Exactly. The TD needs to post a complete set of spot-related rules.

I think they should remove the "call" part of the spot. The better player doesn't have to call his money ball, does he?

The lower players money ball should be spotted. Why should the higher ranked player benefit from committing a foul?

Spot it back up, IMO. like others have said though, it depends on the rules, which should have been made clear before the tournament stayed.

As long as the rules are clear, what the rules are doesn't make too much difference. Presumably the spots are adjusted according to performance and after a while the players will be at more or less the right ratings.

Does this tournament have a handicap/rating adjustment method?

I feel that all 'money balls' should be treated like the 9-ball....
...they spot if not legally made.

If tournament rules state otherwise, I disagree with those rules.

Spot it

Any illegally pocketed handicapped ball must be spotted. Otherwise the player would just shoot them in after the break and take the foul. If the ball is made on the stronger players break it stays down, unless he scratches, then it comes up. If the weaker player makes it the ball spots, unless they scratch, then it stays down.

I didn't even pay attention to who started this thread. Bruce we had this conversation before the big tourney last month and I thought it was determined that the spot ball will come up on fouls, except on the break.

This is perfect.

Unless otherwise stated, any of your opponent's money balls spot if you foul. If the player giving weight makes one of their opponent's money balls on a foul, that ball spots. On the other hand, if the player receiving weight makes one of his own money balls and fouls, the ball stays down because it is not one of his opponent's money balls.

I concur. That is how we play in league.

Just curious...

What happens if the stronger player calls "push out" on the first shot after the break and then pockets one of the spot balls?

It's a legal push but the ball comes back up, around here. Might still be a good, and legitimate, move for the stronger player if the money ball was hanging in a pocket.
