Handicapping money matches? Making a fair game?

Im starting to play a few games here and there for money, nothing major just a few bucks between friends.

I am trying to learn what type of spots and how in order they would go from biggest to smallest.

Help?

Quick example, if I played a guy 8-5 race in 9 ball, what would an equivelant ball spot in a 5-5 race?

I don't mean to sound an ass, but you need to figure this out on your own. The key to making money is making the right game. You have to learn by experience, and by both losing and winning money.

The type of table makes a difference. Also, the skill level of both players makes a difference too. Some of it can only be learned through experience. In general, the better the player, the less difference any particular spot will make. Here are a few threads with some spot rankings and more detailed information:

There's no real accurate way to do this. You can't hook yourself and your opponent up to a "pool-o-meter" and get a hard value to use as a comparison. Plus, people's games vary from day to day. Someone can suck wind one day and shoot lights out the next.

You just have to figure it out by what you know of your game, and your opponent's game, and make a judgment call.

If you search or read some of the linked threads you will find this covered fairly thoroughly. You should really try your best to learn this by observing other player's match-ups. You can also play cheap sets with someone to learn as long as you know they are genuinely trying to win.

You will soon learn that spots are very subjective. Ball spots are of progressively less value as the spotting player's ability increases. Game spots are of little to no value if the two player's skill level is not within a ball and a half.

You will learn some players run out very well early, but don't usually finish a rack out. These players cannot give ball spots as it gives the lesser player multiple chances to win the game. In these instances though, where the lesser player cannot run out much at all, the game spot will be easily covered by the spotting player as long as they don't leave an easy runout.
