Hey all, I do just a very little now and again to help Pat Fleming with his work load of converting videos. We were talking the other day and he has told me about an event that will be going forward in the coming months.

I'm at liberty to share this exciting info with you and wet your pallet with the knowledge that some great DVDs of this event will be also be forthcoming in the months ahead.

Pat is going to be promoting a round robin invitational 14.1 tourney of his own at Comet Billiards in NJ.

He is putting up 10 grand in prize money and he is going to hand pick 5 of the best 14.1 players he can get Pat will of course announce this at Accu-Stats.com as soon as it has all been established. (he estimates 4 day event) It will be played on one table, in a new tournament area equipped with video and lighting at Comet Billiards NJ.

Here's the great concept for the new format. In the interest of making 14.1 exciting to all, these games are going to be 50 point games!

Yep, 50 point 14.1 games.

It will of course involve all the strategy and finesse of 14.1 but, with the short race to 50, it will command the excitement of a high tension game of nine ball.

Each player will play each other player 2 times. Each breaking once. Any win for any player at any time will pay $500 bucks. I believe there will also be an additional money prize for a run of 50 and out.

The purchase of any of these matches on DVD will include the set of both matches between players on the DVD.

Pat is leaving the video equipment set up at Comet indefinitely with plans for future match play of this type, including 9 ball and one pocket.

The video tournament area will be available for challenge matches also. Live streaming video of this event is planned to be available also.

This will be coming up very shortly. Pat envisions Comet to be the action room for great events in the future, and be available through Accu-Stats.

I'm was really excited to hear about this and I hope you all are as well. I thing the round robin double race to 50 format idea is a great concept!

( I hope I got it all accurate, I was very excited to hear about it) :)

Pat .. thanks for letting me be the first to announce it here! :)

cool. I'm glad to hear of anything 14.1 on video.

But... 50?? First guy to get a shot wins.

keep us informed.

Dennis, yeah, I know, at first thought it seems like way too short a match. It did for me also. But,really, the more I thought about it, not so when you put it in the context of the format, every player is playing every other player twice . That means we get to see all the players play 8 times and each player has 8 guaranteed 500 dollar games at stake plus bonus payouts.

(and Pat mentioned the invitation included travel and hotel for the players)

Certainly in a double elimination format it wouldn't be practical, but the more I thought on it, the more interesting it seemed in this format.

The players have more opportunity to win while the spectators still see just the explosive part of a 14.1 match. The white knuckle time starts after the opening break shot :) different, adventurous, but I think a fun round robin concept.

I do believe Pat mentioned to me that should a player run 50 and out, they would be able to continue the run for high run prizes. This again, offers the spectator the opportunity to watch a high run, while sparing them of any potentially boring grind to the end.

Seeing the players all have to match up twice with each other is going to be interesting, and the 50 point matches may draw the attention of all those nine ball guys we want to convert who say 14.1 is too dragged out.

On an aside, the format lends itself well to a small group of guys getting together, pooling 50 buck or 100 bucks each and taking a corner of their local pool room to enjoy a private round robin. It may just give 14.1 the shot in the arm it needs. :D

I'll tell you what would be interesting...adding a 6th row of balls to the rack. Imagine working your way around the table playing 20.1 straight pool.

This idea is awesome! Why? Because I just had the same idea for a similar format earlier today, and was going to post in the 14.1 forum to see what everybody thought of it! Don't remember why it occurred to me, but I'm glad to see someone else with similar thinking. It should be pretty interesting.

I think this is great, because it helps guarantee an even test between the two players. If two players can run 150 and out, it's often about who can catch a break first. I love watching big runs, don't get me wrong. But in a tournament, it doesn't make much sense when a player misses one ball, and never gets another chance in the tournament. With this format every player should at least get a chance to get their licks in. Very cool.

Comet Billiards is a fantastic room. The tables are well maintained and there's plenty of room in between them to keep you from bumping into the guy next to you. Though I play no more, I live vicariously through these posts and updates on AZB and I am very excited about this announcement. Bill Haley, the owner of Comet really deserves this to put his room on the map as a national destination for people who really want to play in a nice enviroment. I've played for big money there in the past, and if I were to play again, I can't think of another room in the northern NJ or NYC area that I'd rather play in. This announcement is great both for 14.1 as well as Comet Billiards and I hope it's the shot of adrenaline that they both need. I will support this anyway I can, even if it means just buying a couple of videos.
