Hard Times

 How were you able to use your bridge hand? Or did you guys use a glove?

When there's that much sweat, the cue actually slides pretty smoothly.
I was more worried about the balls skidding over the wet spots on the table.

A/C and out...

Keep 'em coming...

IDK whether HT is riding it out till it cools off, or they're getting quotes for the A/C.
I'm sympathetic to a point... it's probably major $$$ to upgrade.

Baxter- I think the transformer on the pole outside HT was for general power to the whole building. During the 10 Ball & One Pocket tournament, there was a complete blackout... guys down on shots, poof!.. nothing. Very strange sitting in HT in the dark for a minute... I guess someone was really playing 'lights out'.

Bava- that must be murder in the Central Valley.. Fresno?

Teacher- rep to you, sir!... that's how it's done.

PT109- spot on. Man, just a dehumidifier and 10 degrees down would help.

Bral- exactly. Socal is bordered by desert and ocean, heat and humidity. We only have, what, two months out of the year where it's cooler, and with our drought... meh.

A really good friend, who has been going to Hard Times for 20+ years who also used to work for the Markulis family, said that the A/C unit if a residential unit and not large enough to handle the square footage nor the volume with the high ceiling. Don't know if it's true or not but I've been going there since 1990 or so and thinking back I can't recall it ever being nice & cool in there.

I was there this past Saturday and it was still hot. IF they've got the ac blowing they probably have the thermostat set to around 80.

Edit to mention the soda machines are inoperable, so you're limited to bottled drinks. The reasons that I heard for the shutdown of the soda machines were purely hearsay but spoke VERY poorly to the overall attitude for the maintenance of the establishment.

I was in there for an hour last Friday at noon to practice some drills. I could only take about an hour before I was done/overheated. And I noticed a time before that where the number on the thermostat was 83. The heat is definitely a factor in whether I go to play in their tournaments or not.

Yelvis111 ~ Are you looking for a game when you go to Hard Times? I hear that you play pretty well and that you were very interested in playing some small-medium sized sets of 9-ball.....I think I can find a game for you =)

You've got me confused with someone else. See that over there in the corner? That's my a55. :p

What the hell does 'a55' mean?

pt....an enquiring mind

ASS, the 5's are in place of an S usually you see this on license plates where the DMV won't let you cuss but sometimes you can slide one by replacing a letter with a number that looks kinda-sorta looks like the letter.

i.e. L1C3N53 is loosely translated as LICENSE in nerd speak or the equivalent, sorry for the bad example..........holy moly they even named the shi!t: Leetspeak http://www.netlingo.com/word/leetspeak.php

Edit:
Wow the even have a translator for it, who would have guessed? http://www.robertecker.com/hp/research/leet-converter.php

Thanx, Neil....another new word in my nerdspeak.....

Now....back to the hara55ment of Hot Times...

A/C you and raise you...

Fuji,
i've been going to HT since the early '90's as well... don't remember it being this bad. That makes sense about the residential A/C unit... a little blowing on the tournament side.. forget it with the other side. Saw some guys sweating while playing three cushion on that side.

Yelvis- yeah, I went in Sunday to play one-pocket with another regular... after about 45 minutes, forget it. Imagine if you're in serious action and 'taking the heat' a little.. maybe behind in a race... meltdown time. Maybe the soda thing is to sell more fountain soda?

Torrance- On the nose.

I can tell you that Hard Times Sacramento is kept at an absolutely perfect temperature.

How about a crowd funding campaign to fix HT's air?

Maybe TrumanHW can get it set up. I don't play there, maybe once every couple of years, but I would kick in $25.

I'm in for $25....still got their Tshirt....had some good times there.

Kick start

JohnnyP, you read my mind!... I was thinking Kickstarter, GoFundMe, or something
along those lines... I'll look into it as well. I wonder if anybody playing at HT has a
HVAC background.

We're probably talking, what, $15-$20 K ?...

Don't forget to ask the owner first, I know it sounds ridiculous but some people will refuse help even if it will solve a huge issue for them.

Hard Times in Sacramento is still owned by Mike and Karen Markulis..........enough said ha ha. There's a reason why they've had great pool rooms for the past 30 years, our little clique from Varsity still keeps in touch and sadly someone in our group just passed away.

Neil

A/c d/c

Fuji- agreed... I've experienced that in business. I'm pretty sure there won't be anything done as we head into fall.. they still need to address it. The Markulis's... enough said, they know what they're doing! When you google Hard Times, only Sacramento comes up... Bellflower doesn't even have a site... I think the domain HardTimesBellflower is
even for sale!

HT Bellflower deserves better, it's known around the world for serious pool.

Varsity... that goes back some, doesn't it? Sorry to hear about one of your group passing.. we recently lost Dave "Underdog" Chartier.

It takes more to cool the place down when you shut them off and turn them on when you open. They need to leave them running all of the time.....that's what a thermostat is for.

This is 100% spot on true.

I always heard this back in Arizona, and then tested it a few times with a nice digital meter ( <3 SRP) that tracked usage by the minute.

It's true. Don't shut it off and then turn it on full blast when you want it, set it at the comfortable level and LEAVE IT ALONE. Don't touch. Don't adjust. Don't fiddle with it. Pick your temp, and leave it set there the entire time.

I guess California didn't get the memo from the desert yet :)

I'm going to bump this thread up... went to HT yesterday, Sunday... Labor Day weekend,
to play some one pocket, regular nine ball tournament going on... NO A/C.
None... nada.. they set up some box fans in the tournament side... really?

I'll try talking to the owner and see about a crowd-funding thing. Stay tuned.
