Hardtimes One-pocket event

Not much 1-hole played in Calif? I'd beg to differ. Billy Palmer, Tony Chohan, Rich G., AZB's own Wayne Pullen, Tang Hoa; the 1-pocket scene is pretty good as far as I've ever been able to tell, especially in Southern California. Compared to Manhattan it's almost like the only game even played in CA.

did u forget LA Richie?

Hey Bandido, how is Victor doing these days?

I used to play at College Billiards a few years ago and he was a nice guy and real good one pocket player. I've heard he may not manage College anymore; hopefully he's doing well and still playing some.

Tell him the tall guy with the shaved head who used to play three cushion there says hi. I left 3 years ago to move back up north for winery work.

As we speak Liljon and Tyler Edney are matched up playing 10 ball. They have been playing all night. Liljon is getting the safe 9, I think. Race to 11. Liljon seems to be in charge now, but doesn't have to love the game.

Word is Chohan and Orcollo will match up tomorrow night playing 1P, bet is supposed to be high. There were several thousand bet on the finals. Some of the women are arriving for the women's event.

Sorry Bud, I really don't have any idea as I.m here in the Philippines. JoeyInCali may know. Are you in Mendo/Napa area?

Ooops, didn't realize you were in the PI. I'll be working in St. Helena which is just a little north of Napa.

Since I'm starting to jack this thread a bit, I might as well throw out a Chohan story from the first day at the event. Even though Tony had been up until 6am the first day, he drilled Gande Valle and then asked Parica for a one pocket match at 400/game (9-7 spot). Parica's backer offered 200/game.

Tony says "Man, this is upper echelon gambling. 400". They didn't end up playing while I was there. Tony just went in and took a nap on the bleachers instead of wasting his time at 200/game. Tony is a funny guy, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a lot more popular once he gets on tv a little bit and people see how entertaining he is.

LOL! Congratulations to Tony! Just give Dennis a little bit more time to get a better understanding of the game and Tony will get all the play he wants. Dennis doesn't have any quit in him. I remember when we were together and I being his 1st cue sponsor and backer. This was when he was just an A player and still getting the Wild 6 from Warren. Warren will be on the hill at 12-6 and Dennis will just go ballistic and win 7 straight games. We'd clean-up on the per-game bets as everybody in the house was for the rated player, Warren. Dennis just doesn't let the pressure get the better of him. It got to a point where a friend and myself will just bowl and wait for Dennis, playing in the adjoining pool room, to come and hand us the winnings and let us know who's next and other specifics. Too bad I can't hang with these daily all-nighters as I have other priorities in life.

Perhaps the game has gained some slight popularity in the past year or two. When I lived in Calif., you could walk into almost any Calif. room and never see a one-hole game. Hell, in San Francisco if word got out that there was to be a $20 one-pocket match played, they'd come from 9 counties just to sweat and marvel at it.

The top players you mentioned are obviously going to play 1P, since it's a better matchup game than is yellow ball. At Buffalos in New Orleans you see one-pocket played more than any other game. I think it's gradually becoming the game of choice in the South, and hopefully other places as well.

Funny how things change. The room I play at in the East Bay all they play is one pocket. There are $20 1h games almost every day. I started playing 1h just to have something in common with the players there.

Cheers,
RC

I just want to say well done to my mate Dave Reljic from Australia who I think placed 9th! I had a few games with Dave on a bar box last year and he quit on me after about 4 frames because he didn't make 1 ball lol, and I don't know nothing about 1 pocket!

Seems like Dave's been practising and done pretty well considering he doesnt play the game.

When Dennis really learns how to play One Pocket, I expect him to be matching up with Efren, and beating the likes of Tony C. Give him a week with Grady, Freddie or Cardon and look out.
His shotmaking and cue ball control are as good as anyone playing today (or better). IMHO

I agree with you Jay, but he had no chance in this match. He will be a force when he learns some moves. His game at the other end needs a lot of work, but I'm sure he will learn. They are supposed to play some again tonight after the 9 ball tournament. Tony also drilled Valle & Kiamco here. He put a barrage on Orcullo that would have been hard to beat by anybody.
