Has a ring game tourney format ever been tried?

I love pool, but aside from the Mosconi Cup and the DCC, I rarely watch pool. One on one 9 or 10 ball bore the hell out of me. I do enjoy watching onepocket and banks though. Also enjoy watching the various DCC ring games over the years. Having said that, I think that it would be a really fun tourney to spectate if all tables were used to have, say a 6 handed ring game of any rotation based game. Race to however many points, with the top one or two advancing to the next round.

I think it would be a fun event, with many different characters and dynamics at each table. An added benefit would be possibly less space needed, since less tables would theoretically be needed.

What do y'all think?
 
CSI did one in 2004 (9-ball at the Plaza Hotel).
I also think Frank Almanza has a friend that does something similar.in LA area

If you're asking if it's ever been done, it has. The same outfit that did the Learn from the Best serie (Key Media - Aspen) did a ring 9-ball game tourney in 1986 or so with the top players in the world (Hopkins, Strickland, and Miz were the notables not in attendance). I think three groups, top two of each grouping advanced.

Jimmy Reid won. I think Nick Varner was runner up.

Hi Mark, that's reallyl cool that you took the time to respond. I'm genuinely curious about your thoughts about your event. Did the fans seem to enjoy the format? Were you able to make it a successful business proposition?

As I said, as a fan of the game, I really enjoy the various dynamics when multiple players play a ring game format. For that matter, team events are interesting as well. Part of the reason the Mosconi Cup is so successful, IMO.

In any event, thanks again and good luck with your various initiatives!

Now that sounds like a great event. Did you like it? I would love to see more of this type of thing.
