Has anybody else experienced this?

I play with a wrapped cue and for several month I've had a problem with the fingertips on my grip hand being rough and a little sensitive as if I'd used sandpaper on them.

I tend to slide the cue back and forth in my grip hand as I'm playing without even thinking about it. I'm wondering if the wrap on the cue is acting like sandpaper on my fingertips.

The last thing I need is another cue but I'm considering switching to a wrapless cue just to see if that makes a difference.

My Mezz wrap was bugging me so i did this: lightly sand with 400, wipe it down and apply bow-string wax. Made it just slightly tacky. I used Allen synthetic bs wax from Academy. Cost me 3bux. So far its working great.

I've heard guys taking 600 or 1000 very fine sandpaper and smoothing out
the linen, then sealing it. Another idea is to take it to a cuesmith and have
them double-press the linen.. it'll be really flat and even.

OP, have you been working on cars or bikes? I do, and it f***s up your
hands... spinning wrenches aren't very conducive to a light grip on the cue!

Try old style leather wrap, very smooth and will allow for slip stroke. The DBL press as previously mentioned will also help. Good Luck!

I use bow string wax without sanding. Then burnish with a sheet of paper.

On the contrary I think it actually toughens up your hands and makes them less prone to damage. Because of all of my callouses I have no problem with sweaty or sticky hands and have no use for powder or pool gloves.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll just try a glove for a while and see if that helps.

What's odd is I've always played with a wrap and never had this problem until recently and I now play about 1/3 of the pool I used to.

Has anything in your home or work environment, or your diet or medication changed? Laundry or dish detergent, shampoo, type or brand of PPE at work, more caffeine, less hydration...?

Might just be natural aging. Hope it does not hurt your game.

Could be complications of old age but whatever the cause I'll try a glove on my grip hand.

It's worse with an elephant ear wrap. I love the wrap but it has a kind of like a micro-sandpaper finish. I've developed a pretty good callous on my grip hand thumb.

Lou, this reminded me of my youth, but it was a large callous on the top of my middle finger, where the index finger sits. At one point in my youth, I averaged about 60 hrs a week over a three year period. Guess I got the bug eh

Ive had the same problem before. As someone mentioned, waxing the linen wtap fixed it, for me.

First, i used wax paper. I placed a piece over the linen, then used an iron on low heat, to iron the wrap. Keep the cue/iron moving slowly. You want heat but not so much that it softens the glue holding the wrap.

If the wax paper isnt enough (it wasnt for me), next, i bought some arts & craft wax from Michael's (art/craft chain store). The wax is a hard white wax that melts at a fairly low temp. Cut some thin slivers of it and use the iron, on low heat. Once the wax melts, turn the cue to spread the liquid wax to an even coat. A little bit goes a long way.

With some extra wax build up, the linen isnt as abrasive. It fixed it, for me.
