HAS ANYONE TRIED REFINISHING THE TOP RAILS ON A Gold Crown III?

anyone? how? any info appreciated.

You can't refinish Formica, but you can replace it...but it's not all that easy. I've even replaced the Formica with a real wood laminate finish. So, it all depends on what you mean by refinish?

i should have been more specific. im talking about the clear coat finish. could that be removed and redone?

Yes it can be done. Protect the cushions by taping off. Strip the old finish using a chemical stripper. I like Citri Strip. Very low odor. Clean residue off with Citri Clean (I'm close on the spelling so a Google search will get you there). Sand using a finish sander. Remove the old finish and stain. Stain with what you like best. Let it dry 24 hours minimum. Then, top coat. I like CAB Acrylic but if you don't have a HVLP spray gun I would chose a brush applied method.

so you have even refinished the formica?

any pictures of the job?

If you have formica rails ignore the post. You will have to strip the formica and put new on.

have you tried an auto wax to see how the rails come out? jzmechanix did that to mine and they turned out really nice.

I have done the same thing with my GC rails. I have also used a combo of auto polish, fine cut cleaner, and auto wax.

This is about all you can do, short of stripping the formica off, and replacing.

its not a big deal, but i found a couple of dings that i wanted to fix while everything is apart if it were possible.

Can the top rails on a Gold Crown be replaced with real wood?

I taken a rail to a furniture repair company and they used some type of epoxy filler and did the wood grain by hand. Wasn't a perfect fix but was definitely improved.

Yes, did it on a GC up in Washington state a while back. Replaced the Formica with 1/16" real wood skin, and drilled in new sights. Sanded, stained, finished off the rails...they looked beautiful when done.
