Hello all well here is my question and story for today.
Ok im at my local room playing last night just getting some more practice in and a young starting player comes up to me and asks me will i help him out and practice with him. So we start to play and im trying to help him with his stroke and stance and general basic things. After about 30 minutes of me helping him out he tells me and was very serious "Im not that far behind you".
I tell him ok lets play some races to 5 and see how you do, But i told him im gonna try and play now before i wasnt. So we start are set up i bet him 5-0 he gets PISSED next set 5-0 he gets even WORSE next 5-1 He gets so upset he starts cussing me telling me im an AHOLE. I ask him what he was mad about cause we were playing for NO MONEY and i just wanted him to see that he wasnt as close as he thought and see how he would play with pressure on him. This guy has only been playing 4 years and he thinks he has learned it all so im asking have you ever helped someone jsut to get cussed at.

Oh yeah.

I know exactly what you're talking about anbd not just in pool. I've studied martial arts for like 23 years since I was seven or eight, and I used to give private lessons. Until an injury I was training for and a hopeful for Olympic Tae Kwan Do. I was giving private lesson to this one guy and I was trying to explain a concept and demonstrate it at a slow speed and he kept shifting his aim to kick me anyways. I kept trying to explain to him that at full speed he wouldn't be able to do that, but he replied with "I'm almost as good as you are!" I said alright tonight we'll go outside and full contact spar.

We went outside and was full contact sparring and all I did for the first couple of minutes was avoid his attacks and then I blocked one kick by slapping down his foot. I think I cracked one of his metacarpals because he fell down and then said I can't go on.

All he would admit to is me being in better condition than him.

I've had similar experience with people that I work with at pool also. In pool I think it's more prevalent because they watch PHJ or COM and think they're poolsharks or huslters, although most people don't even know the difference.

So, was the room upstairs? The last time I rolled through there, the place we met to match up was downtown, upstairs.

that was Buddies Place upstairs as seen in the george dickel ads in penthouse and field and stream and such and nope buddies is no longer.
The original owner had to move from that building after the building owner found God and said there woudl be no beer served in his building. buddies moved across downtown to the other side of the courthouse and was there for several years until the owner died , his son ran it for about 2 years after that then closed and sold it to a friend of mine he totally reworked the place and now its called " Shooters ".

That was real nice of you to help him and teach him. Wish I had someone like that.

But why is it so important to you to make sure he knows he's not nearly as good as he thinks he is? Why not just let him believe what he says? What good were you expecting by totally squashing him like that?

Sorry, it's metatarsals in the foot, not metacarpals, which are in the hand, but I get your point.

I have taken aside a few select women that I thought had potential, knowing full well they would take that information and use it at some point against me. However, what I didn't expect is that one of them would befriend someone who absolutely hates me, that never won a qualifier in her whole life and is now on the pro tour, and now SHE uses stuff I taught her friend against me. She vilifies me at every turn and won't even shake my hand before or after a match which I think is horrifying for the young ones out there that may see us as role models about proper conduct. :(

My thoughts ...

First, I practice on my game by myself.
Second, I don't play for free, exception being if I am teaching.
Third, If they are my student, I don't play them, I teach them.
And I do not teach all that I know, I teach them what they
should know.

Playing against someone is a competition, not practice.

Not quite the same situation but when my home table was new and I was pretty new to shooting pool, my neighbor dropped over to borrow something and I asked him if he wanted to play a few games of 8-ball pool...

"Hmmn..." he said, "I've never played pool. I'll play but you'll have to show me what to do."

No problem. I showed him how to hold the cue, set him up in his stance and helped him shoot a few balls. I guided him thru the first couple of games which he won with me telling him what to do for every shot and him clumsily doing it.

"Ok... I think you've got the hang of it," I said. "Let's play a race to 5."

"Ok..."

He beat me 5-0. Turns out he played snooker in a top league in Holland and was a tournament 3-cushion player as well.

But, he'd never played pool.

Ok first to Spetty
You asked why is it important for me to show him he isnt as good as he thinks he is. I was trying to help him adn save him some CASH cause he was rambling on about wanting to gamble and such. Second i wanted to see how he delt with having alittle heat thrown on him and i saw it and tried to explain how to control himself and not let your opponent see your emotions.

Ok now for snapshot
Im like you i NEVER practice with anyone nor have i offered any help to these young players coming up i figure they should pay their dues just like i did playing guys like me for cash, BUT I thought no im gonna try and be a good guy this time when i have came back to pool. This makes the 2nd guy I have helped in the last 2 weeks with the same end result. Maybe im just not cut out to help others i dont know i try and explain to them that they have no natrual skill for the game and to get better they MUST HIT BALLS and they just look at me like i KICKED their Dog or something. I have no clue how to help these people but the 1 girl I helped a few nights ago after the weekly tourny actually picked up what i was saying and followed it thru go figure.

Ohwell time to go hit balls only gonna get about 3 or 4 hours in today must go with the wife and kids shopping tonight.

Any ideas on how to tell these people they MUST PRACTICE without making it out like they are morons woudl be helpful also because like i said im trying to turn over a new leaf this time coming back to pool.

I always ...

Tell students that for evey hour of instruction, that
they need to spend 4 hours on the table alone practicing
what I have taught them as a rule. I tell them to practice
it the way I taught them, then use their own imagination
for variations of what I taught them. You should see their
faces sometimes that they need to shoot the shots I want
them to learn with 12 different types of english for each shot ... lol

My approach for teaching women is a little different from a man
student because they way they think is a little different.

You must stress to them that Pool is fun, but that they can not
get good at it unless they work hard at it.

Trying to jumpstart someone's brain can be very frustrating at
times, some people just won't 'get it'. Tell them how good they
can become is only limited by 'their imagination'. No imagination,
no game, lots of imagination and hard work, good game.

Sometimes what I attribute to being 'common sense' is difficult logic
to another person. As far as the guy, have him wax on, wax off till
his mind 'gets right'.

good ideas snapshot because i woudl really like to see these guys and girls all get better and i do enjoy teaching them waht i know. Just kinda BLOWS my mind when i show them something as EASY as if theball comes off this side of the object with no english it goes THIS WAY , LOL and they look at me like i jsut spoke in greek to them. But i have a few that sit and watch me play and never bother me but they jsut watch while i practice and i finally today asked one of them if he wanted to hit a few around, he just says " No ty I dont have time" BUT he sat there another 30 minutes while i practiced. Ohwell tomorrow is another day .

I started playing pool when I lived in a small town and very quickly was able to get ahead of everyone. Shortly after, I moved to Syracuse and at the pool hall I see a guy with his own stick. I asked him if he wanted to play for something. He said no, but lets just play. I decided to play for the hell of it. He ran 256 balls (we played 14.1 race to 150). Anyway it was Babe Cranfield. The pros say he was the best 14.1 player that ever lived. Anyway he became my regular game for quite some time and unlike the kid you played I instead realized I could learn something.

That's funny ...

Pete, I am sure that your face took on different expressions at
different ball counts during the run ... lol You know that moment
when you realize that you are in over your head, and in deep doo-doo.

Haven't you heard the saying...... A bought lesson is better than a taught lesson. Go ahead and run some balls in the rail and hustle him and take what you can, then say ef him................

Yeah and my score was zero. I remember that day so perfectly. I broke and left one ball open, it was followed by 255 more. Anyway it was great playing the now late Babe.

Even though I'm getting out of topic: Babe use to always tell me that pool players would never get their due recognition in his life time. I have always remembered that and it still bothers me now as I can see his expression when he would say it. Babe loved pool. Wish he were here for the IPT. Anyway, this is why I'm a fan of IPT.
