Have a Few Countries Caught The Pinoy's?

When I left China about 2 years ago. the kids that I saw and played against who were taking coaching and playing every day were not state sponsored or coached.

I was most familiar with the situation at the Pan Xiao Ting pool room in Shanghai. there were 12-15 boys and girls, ages 10-15 in there every afternoon receiving coaching and playing. There parents were paying a flat monthly fee for the coaching and table time.

I another room Chao Fang Pang had several young private students who were paying him directly

Maybe things have changed. At that time most of the coaches were from Taiwan.

IMHO, Taiwan has been ahead of the Philippines for some time now. China is getting there, but doesn't have as many seasoned pros as other countries yet (in 5-10 years, they will be much stronger).

Japan probably wont get there. The problem with Japan is that virtually nobody under 18 plays pool unless their dad owns a pool hall. The serious players tend to leave the wife and kids at home to go play (which is probably a good thing). This severely limits the talent pool as most world beaters start out as pre-teens or earlier. I'm 25 and when I go to the tournaments in my area (big and small), I am nearly always the youngest one, and always the youngest one to make it into the money.

problem with Japan is that it's a nation of trends

when people were playing, they produced world champions in a very short period of time, China can't say that, female players notwithstanding

if Japan experienced another pool boom, look out world.....

What World Champions has Japan had in pool. I am too lazy to look it up but I can only think of one maybe. Okamura on the men's side.

China does not yet have a men's world champion but that doesn't mean that they don't have world championship caliber players already. Fu Jian Bo, Liu Haito, and Li He Wen are three players who have already proven themselves against international fields.

I am not sure how long Chinese players have been seriously playing but it's got to be a decade or more at least. Pool here is strange though. It's not popular everywhere and it's not the same everywhere. You can't hardly find an "american" style pool table in Beijing but you can find hundreds of pool halls with 9 foot British style pool tables with snooker pockets.

Okumura and Takahashi, not bad considering Japan has less than half the population of the US and about 10% that of China, but in the bigger picture, Japan has produced very few world class players.

On the other hand, Japan has some scary good 3 cushion players even thought the game hasn't been popular here for decades.

Scaramouche you surprise me, you know there are scores of kids in the UK that play beyond that level and even younger

China's billion plus population has produced one shot at snooker glory, Ding, and it's a long one

Canada produced our world champion decades ago and at that time probably had more kids that outplayed the kid on the youtube video with 2% of the chinese population, lol

As far as the Pinoys, love em, lots of fun to watch, among the best in the world but I've never seen anything to suggest they are light years above everyone else like some people think

they need a Mosconi cup team

Glad I could surprise you, keep you from falling off your chair from boredom.

Yes, snooker used to be a much bigger deal. The Canadian Championship was held at the CNE with the top pros coming over.

One year Dennis Taylor went back with a two piece cue. They'd never seen one before.

Check out the yarn in #29 of this thread

Going by major tourney results in recent years where pinoys and taiwanese were involved, i'd say that the pinoys are ahead of the taiwanese.

Japan produced their two champs in a very short time during a small pool boom out of a very small talent pool

very impressive imo

and of course Fong Pang Chao was smoking the Pinnoys back in the day

I would say the Phillipnes has a deep talent pool of guys who have been on the cusp for a very long time but overall just never dominated as expected

Things CTE does help:
-getting yourself in the right position to possibly pocket the ball if stroke the ball correctly.

Quite possibly the dog would have caught the rabbit if he hadn't stop to shit. :)
