I have a Buss custom 4 point with a stainless steel 5/16-14 (I think) joint, black lizard skin wrap, and a black water buffalo tip.

I've played this combo for 8 years.

Can anyone who has hit a Buss compare the 'hit' to other high end cues??

Are Buss's considered a very stiff hit?

I'm interested in comparisons to Southwest, Joss West, Scruggs, Richard Black, Black Boar, and basically anything else.. Been browsing the forum a lot and wanting a new cue haha.

I'm very interested in your opinions. thanks in advance.

I will get some photos up in a few days.. I ordered mine from Jim and designed it myself so it has sentimental value.. prob won't ever let it go.. still very curious about comparison of the feel ... anyone??

Jim's cues are as good as any out there, to be popular doesn't mean that something is the best. I think when people ask these questions that there is no real answer that can be given because hit is so subjective to each persons individual taste.

All of the other brands you have listed above are cues made by great cue makers, some are more popular than others but like I said above that doesn't make them better or worst.

I have a couple of Jim's cues and I would never sell them, and since I started making cues I play with nothing except cues of my own making. The only advise I can give you is to try as many cues as you possible can before you make your next purchase, this way you can find something you like and you will be happy with, because again in my opinion no one say what is best.

I have both a Jim Buss and a Richard Black but the Buss in my opinion plays better "for me" The Black has a steel joint while the Buss has a wood to wood 3/8 x 10 joint. I like both cues but if I could only play with one it would be the Buss. My Buss plays similar to my Ray Schuler. The best thing I think you could do is go to a place like Valley Forge and hit with several cues with different configurations from different makers.

I own many cues and have studied the hit of many more. Jim Buss is among the very best out there. Lively but less stiff than many. SW, Capone, McWorter hit stiffer in my opinion. The Buss feels less stiff but is not soft and quiet either. Tips make a huge difference, but in general, I put Buss cues hit toward the middle of the stiffness scale. Sweet cues.

I have a custom made Jim Buss four point cue with ivory joint, butt cap and ferrule. I have a sniper med hard tip. I also have a Gina, Jack Madden, Meuchi Original, Willy Hoppe and Joss West. All of these cues hit different IMO but my Buss cue is unique because it is 60 inches long with the extra length in the butt and not extra long shafts. It is an awesome player and I would put it up against any cue out there.

Link to the Smithsonian Pool thing. Think the Exhibit is still in LIMGO, but the 12 Cue are there.
