Head of the table??

Hello to all,
I recently purchased an Olhausen 7 ft table, used and disassembled. I'm having a miserable time trying to level the slate. My question is: One piece is marked "head", and I'm assuming this piece should be at the end where the Olhausen name is on the table frame, is it possible I've got all of the pieces out of position?

Not necessaraly, The frame should have Head or an H on the plywood platform the slate sits on. what type of level are you useing?

I'm using a Starrett 6" Machinists level on top of a 4' level. I just removed all 3 slate pieces again and there is not an H to be found. The pieces are numbered 1-2-3 on the slate and frame and they are actually positioned correctly. When I try to level the seams everything goes way off. The piece at the head (1)is level, but the seam between the head and middle (2) is way off. Slate 3 is pretty much right on also but the seam between #2 & #3is very close. I'm thinking of disassembling and starting over. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

the starrett on the 4 ft level is going to make you go crazy...I would be happy to stop by and level the table for you. Free of charge....I am in Linden tomorrow doing a table move. Just give me a call tonight if you want the help.

Table

Hats off to pat for his efforts!
Leveling slates with such a short machinist level is only for the advanced/skilled table mechanic and not using it on a 4 foot level that is not flat as you think it is.... Your in good hands with Pat'O leveling your slates.

Pat, I can't give you any more green rep yet, but that's awesome.

Green to you!!!! I wish you were in my neck of the woods, I would have been more than happy to pay you to work on my table. I have a hard time finding someone local who will do a professional job. It seems all of the recovered local tables I see look terrible at best. I had to stumble through my Gold Crown myself with help from Josh, Simonis DVDs, and interweb.

I've got to say how impressed I am with Pat's offer
to help me. He spent about 20 minutes on the phone
with me explaining the leveling process and basically
where I went wrong with one 6" level on a 4 footer.
Even though I wasn't able to meet him today he still
wants to help me get this table fixed. Truly amazing!!

Wow!! So, this past Saturday Pat came by as promised! Originally he
was thinking this would be a pretty quick leveling job but
there were some issues to work out and true to his word, he leveled and
sealed the table for me. Pat and Oscar were here for almost 2 hours and both
were so professional with their process I was really amazed. It's not
often someone offers to help for free let alone spend a Saturday morning to
do so. My gratitude to Pat on keeping his word and doing an outstanding job!!

Sounds like a small monetary thank you should be in order.

What was wrong with putting the 6" level on the 4' level? Is it a problem due to the multiple slates and not having the slate seam aligned? Did you start by leveling the center slate first then matching up the seams then leveling the outer slates or did you try to do all 3 at once? I had no intention of doing my GCII myself but ended up having to do it. I installed all 3 slates but left gaps between center and outer slates. I leveled center slate then matched up ends and leveled those. Hope I did not eff it up, it would not be the first time.

I'm guessing it's that slates aren't really that flat. Cuephoric just did my diamond pro, and we were seeing noticeable variances within 6" (a hand width). And this was on 30mm diamond slates.

He was using 2 12" starett levels, and needed both at the same time.

You'd be surprised at the amount of bow you get before shimming the centers of the slates, too.

I would imagine working with a 6" level would be a little like working on quicksand, and 4' is just too long to be useful.

Thank you!!

Hi to all. I wanted to update this thread. Back when Pat leveled my table we agreed it would be worthwhile to replace the cushions and the cloth, as everything appeared to be original and the cushions were dead. Well, today as promised Pat showed up right on time with the new cushions & cloth. He used Simonis 860 and let me say I absolutely love the way this table plays & looks!! This man runs his business like a true professional! If I ever hear of anyone looking to install, move or buy a table I will most definitely endorse Pat and his company!! What a great experience!! My thanks again to Pat!!
