The gambling for food thread reminded me of something from long ago. I have gambled to be able to eat more times than one but this is about someone else.

A road player came into a small bar I was in, no doubt planning to pump up after a rough trip through Greenway. After a few games for small stakes where he was obviously stalling a bit and I was laying low but winning most of the games, he called me to the head of the table. "You know I am stalling, I know you are stalling, let's cut the crap and play pool." He introduced himself by a different name than he had given when he came to the table and the battle was on. The hours that followed were some of the most intense and fun I have ever had on a pool table. The other player was obviously enjoying himself as much as I was.

Only when he handed me his last dollar did I realize he was playing for every cent he had. He was busted flat and far from home. Walking sticks didn't really go with barrooms but I offered him enough to eat on and a tank of gas since he said he would be fine once he made it back to a pool hall. All he would take was a couple of dollars for gas.(It was about thirty cents a gallon then, I said this story was from long ago!)

I have played a lot of people until one of us was busted but he remains the only one that was laughing and smiling when he bet his last dollar. A true road warrior. He wanted to do a little traveling together and left his name and a contact number. The road kept calling me and I had far better gigs at home so I threw the number away. Sad to say, I can't even remember his name anymore.

to me there is nothing better than being in a close match up(by close i mean a coin flip) and grinding it out to the end.ive had a few of these battles over the years and i remember them well, win or lose.to be in a tough but fair game and have to play your guts out to win is what matching up and playing should be about.no stealing,no stalling,no lamb killing, no bs moves and angles just keep quiet and play and let heart decide who is the best on this day:)

I played "on ass" twice in my life. I was playing $2 9-Ball both times, pay after five games (when someone is $10 ahead). If I lost, I was probably going to get my ass kicked. I was not playing guys who couldn't play either. Somehow I managed to win both times, once when the guy had me on three a couple of times. All I can say was I had my belly on the table and my heart beating strong. That's when you find out what you're really made of.

Trust me, that was harder than betting $500 a game today.
