Looking at options for heating & cooling a 12x24 shop in the midwest.

Window ac/heater combo was suggested, any other ideas? What do some of you use?

Thnx,
Zim

The easiest would be a 5000kw electric hanging heater and a window ac for the summer months. If you prefer gas heat, then a Hot Dawg hanging heater would work great. Electric heat will not add any humidity.

Buy a real heater. Two miserable winters with a 4500 watt hardware store POS that ran day and night was enough. I found a motel style heat pump with electric assist for $450 on craigslist. Can't beat the AC and heat in one unit. I keep the shop at 70-75 year around at half the cost.

A window AC in a little shop is great but make sure you get one that has an efficiency switch. Most cheap AC units run the fan constantly and the pump cycles. The efficiency switch shuts down the fan with the compressor. Besides saving money the fan running 24/7 will drive you nuts.

I bought one of the window mounted PTAC units about 6.5 years ago. I don't run it constantly, only when I need to heat or cool. It does a great job with either in my 24x24 shop.

Well, it DID a great job, until it crapped out about 2 weeks ago. I paid about $600 for it new and now I'm looking for a repairman to tell me if I should fix it or get another.

heater

For the money total cost of ownership Look at a split system. Compressor outside fan inside. 18seer unit will cost you pennies a day to run.
I have a fujitsu Halcyon.

Im kinda leaning to an all in one (ac & heat) unit with thermostat. Like to leave at 70-74 yr round.

IMO, I would skip the window unit. It brings in too much outside air, which is an issue down here in Florida as far as humidity.

You could look at a mini-split system. Half mounts on the wall in the shop and the other half is outside. It doesn't need a window; only a small hole (less than 2''.) Up front cost depends on your energy-efficiency requirements.

I have what we call the package units.Gas heat and air all in one unit that sits outside. My shop is 40 x 60 and 18ft. high. The shop area is 40 x 42 and I have a 5 ton unit to heat and cool it.My office and game room take up the other 18 x 40 and are heated and cooled with a 2.5 ton package unit.My gas bill and power bill are cheaper than the bill for my home.Mine are 14 years old and still work fine.I do have a humidifier on the 5 ton unit for winter months.

Best Wishes,

Steve

Package units sound like the way to go to me. I've had several friends in the AC/heating Buss. that always recommended These in situations where a home was not already equipped with climate control, and a homeowner/DIYselfer wanted to install something on the cheap and easy. you can find deals on them used in good working order, and You can get them with gas or electric heat. Seems perfect for a self contained shop.

The all in one heat pump split system whatever is the route. After installing a heat pump in my house I had to get on for the shop. You won't regret it.
I'm easily heating 25x25 with my motel style heat pump. I work in comfort. Insulate your shop!!

Shop will be insulated! I like the hotel style heater/ac wall mounted system, will look more into it.
Thnx to all who replied!

Watch Craigslist. I see one about every month. Use caution. I looked at a couple that were not Heat pumps with the electric assist. They were AC with electric heat.
