Heavier cue for 14.1 ?

I once heard that a heavier cue is better for 14.1 because a strong follow shot to plow through the rack is one of the most important shots in straight pool. Or would i be sacrifice another part of my game. I currently play with 18.5 oz. Any opinions, Thanks

I have heard this but I don't believe it.

Look at any other sports such as golf or baseball, a lighter club - batt produces better forward movement. And look at most break cues they are all lighter to produce a more explosive break.

I say it's all what works for you and your stroke !!

I've personally never known a decent Straight Pool player who played with over 21 ounces. Do you consider anything over 18.5 oz. heavy? I've played with a 20 ounce cue and did for many years. I now play with 19-19.5 or a bit over but under 20.

I think it may have had to do with the slower napped cloth back in the day, but with today's fast cloth, there's really no need to "plow" through the balls anymore. They do a nice job of opening up on their own.

That was going to be my input until I found you had already said it.

I prefer a 19.5 to 20 oz. cue, but I don't think weight has a lot to do with it. In fact, I would want to play with the cue that felt best regardless of weight.

I also feel a smooth delivery goes through the balls better than anything. If you're playing well and feel what's going to happen, the CB eats right through with no issues, regardless of an ounce or so IMO.

Remember back in the day cues were thicker in the handle section. More wood = more weight.

That said, it is all personal preference. I prefer a cue around 19.5 though for years I played with an 18 oz cue.

Earl who plays lights out is playing with a 30 oz cue or something like that I read about?

Heavier Is Better

When it comes to cues, I like BBW's! Could've said BBC's but that would've led to a whole lot of controversy I'm not interested in dealing with. Been playing with 21 ounce cues since as long as I can remember and it just feels more steady and comfortable. I dropped $1,400 on a Cory Barnhart that was 19.5 oz and sold it two months later at a loss. Hit great, just couldn't get used to the weight. It's a personal preference with no science backing up what weight is optimal.

For 14.1 you are looking for a stiffer hit not additional weight. ebony and purpleheart make excellent cues for 14.1.

Thanks to everyone for your input. Think i'll stay with 18.5 oz since that feels the best to me. Thanks again

And that's the best way to go. What feels best to you - is best for you. Nobody can tell you what weight cue you should be playing with.
