The play surface I am pretty sure is 31 inches and then 36 inches to the bottom of the bulb.

Almost. I believe playing surfaces are at 32 inches and you are correct, 36 inches to the bottom of the bulb. 68" is the magic number (6 & 1/2 feet).

Table and light heights ...

The WPA (and BCA) rules are:

8 and 9 foot tables: Table heights must be between 29 1/4" to 31".

15. Lights
The bed and rails of the table must receive at least 520 lux (48 footcandles) of light at every point. A screen or reflector configuration is advised so that the center of the table does not receive noticeably more lighting than the rails and the corners of the table. If the light fixture above the table may be moved aside (referee), the minimum height of the
fixture should be no lower than 40 inches [1.016 m] above the bed of the table. If the light fixture above the table is non-movable, the fixture should be no lower than 65 inches [1.65 m] above the bed of the table. The intensity of any directed light on the players at the table should not be blinding. Blinding light starts at 5000 lux (465 footcandles) direct view. The rest of the venue (bleachers, etc.) should receive at least 50 lux (5 footcandles) of light.

Snap-man,
My 4-light fixture for my 9-footer says to place it so the lights are 31 inches from the surface of the table (as did the instructions on my previous 4-light fixture - I've had 2 different ones from 2 different manufacturers). Could that 40 inch recommendation be for the large, rectangular box fixtures?????

P.S. - my wife was home when the last one was installed around 35 or 36 inches and that SUCKED - seems much better at 31 inches (I lowered it) - but maybe I'm just used to that height.

i played on a friends table wich i think was a small 6 and was very low to me and seemed to miss hangers , i had little cue ball control so i blame it on his table height haha then at home i was practicing and seemd much better but im not likeing it too high either ,as i type this im going to lower to 32 na dsee what happens thankxz again for the fast input .btw im bout 6 ft tall maybe that has something to do with it but evryone whos seen my table always comments on tallness

An excellent height for the playing surface is right around 30". This is the same height as most dining room tables (there probably is a relationship going back a couple of hundred years). Gold Crowns are almost always set at 30 to 30.5".

Interestingly enough, if you travel to Japan, you may notice that table heights there tend to be set a little lower (around 29 to 29.5"). That is actually a big difference and quite noiticeable. I suspect it has something to do with the average height of a man being shy of 5' 6".

And English Snooker tables (6 x 12's) are noticeably higher. I would guess around 32".

I should play in Japan ! That inch difference on a 9' table allows me to shoot without the bridge at least a diamond past the side pocket. Tables at 30"-31" I need the bridge if the cueball is anywhere past the side pocket. This is a huge difference to me, I am about 5' 6".

PS to snapper, 68" is 5' 8", not 6 & 1/2 feet.

my adjuster level on the bottom of the foot of the table is all the way down and im im still at 34 inches ,should i remove the level adjusters so i can get the right height or will i damage anything?? im measuring from the floor to the cushion and im at 34 i was bout 35 and some change ...ok now 20 minutes later i removed the leg levelers and im at 31 woo hoo seems better playing surface , but will i hurt anything by the leg being on the floor directly?and y would it have this leveler thing if it made it so high?? im gonna try and post some pics lets see if i can do that right..

Sean, you should be measuring the height from the floor to the playing surface of the table.

And by the way, the lights should be almost the same height above the playing surface. This can vary from 30" to 36", depending on the fixture.

ok im at 32 inches now but it still seems high lol. i guess im just too picky at some things ,again thaksz for the great input
