Hello, question about Schon cue..

Hello, I was given a Schon cue by my father back in '97 before he passed away (Along with a McDermott). He went out of his way to make sure I knew that the McDermott was for play and the Schon for show. I really didn't care since I never used them. Last night as I was organizing my closet in the back I came across these again.

Went to a local pool store who indicated they were very knowledgeable about cues.. and they turned to google for their answer... Best they could say was it looked like an 81 s-10, but they weren't sure and had no idea on price or if it was a sought after brand. Doing a smidge of research I see that it has the cards at the base like the s-10 but does not have implex joints so I'm lost... As such, I turn to your forum and users expertise to help me out. I took six photos but need 4 more posts to link them. So if anyone has knowledge about Schon, please message me so I can have you take a look.

If it has some decent value I think I'm going to try and sell it, but if not I'll just toss it back in the closet and let it rest for another decade or two, lol.

Thank you, this is the site that the "expert" at the pool store looked at. The s series s-10 has the same style of playing cards at the base as mine, however mine is in a lighter but darker than others wood (the middle color, cause that's useful, lol).

The S-10 didn't necessarily have an implex joint - please refer to the description:

If it has sharp points and rings at the joint like the photo - it's definitely collectible. You should post some photos and we may be able to give you an idea of the value. I do know of someone who would likely buy it.

The cue looks like it's in fantastic condition.

I assume the shafts don't have the Schon imprint. This cue was likely made in the 1988 - 1992 timeframe and was not part of a usual line. The inlay looks like it was made on a pantograph. I have most of the Schon catalogs and I couldn't find it.

The cue is probably not any more collectible than any other older Schon. These older Schons are respected as good playing cues. The cue looks original to me, wrap and all - it looks like it's in nice shape. You could try e-mailing Schon - info@schoncues.com they might be able to find it for you.

Nice Schon. As was said, they are well regarded as shooters.

Not to distract from the Schon, but the early McDermots are highly regarded shooters as well, and some quite collectible. In fact, McDermott has been around longer than Schon and their early cues are quite collectible. The values can be surprising.

I would be very interested to see the McDermott actually, if you would be so kind.

Although they are great cues I am not a Schon fan, I am an early McDermott fan. :smile:

You do not have a schon S-10 but something close to it. I saw a cue very similar to yours for sale at the galveston tournament a couple of years ago and they were asking $1,500 or $1,600 for it. It had the cards on the butt and no points. It had different color wood than what was used on your cue. Your cue is stained birdseye, the other card cue in galveston was non-stained birdseye

I do have a S-10 that was made in 1981. It has the ebony butt, points with veneers and a steel joint like the one on the palmer collector webpage. I was offered $1,500 for mine by a cue vendor. I have been told my cue is worth maybe 2k. About twenty years ago I visited the Schon factory and they told me that was one of the hardest cues to make. Straight inlays are easy but the curves involved with fitting the card inlays into the background wood was a real headache. This was before CNC was used.

My S-10 has the same veneers as the s-10 on the palmer collector webpage but a different ring at the joint. I came across a person with an s-10 with a different set of veneers on his cue and the same joint ring. I have come across four of these card schons in the last 30 years and they were all a little different. I was told that they were one of a kind cues. Only a few were made, they were hard to make and each one is unique in some way. The wood used, the ring, the wrap, stain, order of cards, something.

I understand all of these card cues were made between 1981 and 1985, your cue has that old style light green/black specs wrap but the newer silver ring joint which schon started playing around with in the early 80's.

I wonder what the background is made out of for the card inlays, is that ivory or holly? If it is ivory that would add to the value. It also looks like some of your card inlays are black and some are red? That is something I have never come across. The other card cues all had all black card inlays. Also, the order of your cards around the butt is different. Starting with schon lining up with the heart, same as yours, and moving the cue clockwise, mine goes heart, club, diamond, spade. It looks like yours goes heart, spade, diamond, club.

I purchased my s-10 used from Javier Franco, a friend of my fathers for $175 in 1981 or 82, I was right out of college. It was just a few months old and he basically gave me a real good deal on it because my father and he would do road trips together and Javier had just purchased a southwest. He said it was a one of a kind cue when he sold it to me. I have no idea what they sold for new at the time but I can figure in the $300-$400 range. It came with two shafts and I later added a joss west shaft that had the same ring work to my cue case.

I believe it is a later 80's cue also. As a note the ringwork could be mixed and matched even on the earliest Schon cues along with the implex joint. I have seen some R series that have had implex joints from the factory. Schon would also mix and match the forearms of one series to the butt of another. Wether this was their idea or the customers, who knows. Even though they had a catalog line, Schon was still a custom shop and would make just about whatever you want.

Either way it is still a nice cue and would have some value. The value on old Schon cues tend to be higher for pristine catalog versions rather than the custom or one off cues from the same era. That will depend on work in the cue and is a generalization.
