Hello, New to these forums so wanted to start out by saying hi to everyone. Started reading here last month and already found alot of useful information.

I just purchased a new Ikon cue from predator cues. Upgrading from my old conventional shaft. I was playing with lower end poison cue. Ive played with the new cue in two separate 4 hours sessions and I seem to be having a bit of trouble adjusting to the new cue. My straight shots seem to rattle the pockets more often than not and I consistently over or under cut a good portion of my cut shots.

I've been playing pool for several years now and the shots I am missing seem fairly easy. I've been getting very frustrated. Is this an issue anyone else has experienced when switching from a conventional shaft to a "low deflection" shaft or 314. I keep hoping ill get used to it, or figure it out soon and it will all just go away.

The only other thing I can think of that would be causing the change is moving from a medium tip to a hard on the new cue.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Very common. Had the same problem when I started using the 314-2. The best thing I can tell you is bear with it, once your used to them they are great. The hardest thing I had with it was re-learning the aim. When starting out with one, less is more. It might take you about a good solid week to re-train your aim.

I too had the same issue when I switched to a 314-2 from a Players Cue. Alot of AZer's said to give a week and sure enough I was back on track. I would play 3/5 hours a day 4/5 days a week. Now if I pick up a bar cue or a one piece shaft, I sometimes miss the easiest of shots with english. I play with a Z-2 now. Hang in there and you'll love it. Ron

Give it time my friend.. Any time you are putting side spin on the ball, the CB will react a bit different with any LD cue.. You just need to work through it and figure out how to aim when using english.. You should adapt pretty quickly..

Anyone that switches from a standard to a LD shaft goes through it, the adjustment varies from player to player.. Peace

Good to hear that, I tried to tell myself that I would get used to it but it feels better to hear it from other players.

Although I am a little worried about only being able to play with 'LD' cues once I get used to it.. I think it will be worth it.

Thanks you!

Like they said. Just stick with it. It took me a MONTH to adjust to my predator but once I did I loved playing with it. Hang in there youll love it eventually.

Your low deflection shaft, for the most part, will only effect your aim on shots when you apply side English. If you are having a problem with shots with no English it is probably because you are applying English inadvertently.

Now to get used to the low deflection shaft, here is a drill. Just set up this straight in shot and try shoot it in with right English. No draw or top spin. If you make the object ball, the cue ball should stop and spin in place. If you use a measles cue ball, the dots will seem to disappear while the cue ball spins in place.

After you can do this, vary the distance of both the object ball and cue ball to the pocket. Now try it again with a variety of speeds. You should now be on your way to enjoying a LD shaft.

By the way, many good players who have played pool for years have difficulty with this shot. Ask a couple of your friends to try this.

CueTable Help

I've got one also and I have missed a few shots that are so easy that I felt like sticking my head in the oven afterwards. We're talking routine rail cuts 2 feet from the pocket.

This may or may not help. I had one shot where the OB was 2 feet from the corner (along the long rail) but I had to play it in the far corner, 7 feet away. The CB was less than a foot away and had maybe a 30 degree angle. I had to hit it with inside.

Normally I am gonna make this... I dunno, 80%? more? But I was absolutely at a loss about where to aim it with the new shaft. I stared at it for a full minute. Finally I just lined it up to aim as if I were using center ball, moved my tip sideways, then fired before I had even 2 more seconds to think about it and change my mind. It flew off the table.

Juuuust kidding, it went in exactly as I wanted with the inside spin. Basically I forced myself to ignore deflection and aim like it's a center ball shot, and didn't allow my brain to interfere with the shot.
