i just went up to a 6 in APA tonight and i know i should be one but i need to tune up my game so can win in money cup.. tonight was the last night of session.. i know i should be a 6 but i dont know if mentally i can handle it or not. (not saftey and stratagey wise, just i cant belive it im only 17 and it took me a year to get there) so anyway do any of you have any good drills to run to get my game in tip top shape so im there mentally

All i can say is, rack them up and then break them up and then try to run out the rack as many times as you can, do this untill your average clearance increase and improves.

I honestly don't know of any ways to improve your game more then to actually try to run out racks.

I thought you had to be 18 to be in the APA? Apparently not since you were 16 when you started.

Get the book "Pleasures of Small Moitons" and read it. Will help you on part of the mental game. As far as drill there are plenty on the web, but the "8 Ball Bible" is pretty good.

Good Luck.

Russ what are you smoking tonight?

Get some lessons, it wil help with your consistency, also work on a pre-shot routine.

I got bumped this session as well. I had been a 5 for maybe 3-4 years. I like to warm up with 9ball no defense. I wouldnt work so much on running racks, as the average apa player wont runout with all their balls on the table. Identify trouble spots for both colors, if they have a clear out and you dont, tie their balls up to give yourself some time to get a good plan going. The best matchup for a 6, is either a 5 or another 6. The 7s in our area are on a diff planet. Most could give up 5 in a race to 6 and win. If you like to play the ghost, make sure you are planning your out, not just running out. Try to plan the entire out, and during the process work 3 balls ahead, its easier to get back in line if you have a plan. I thinks that enough for tonight.

do you guys think it would help to play with a soft break and work on preparing a plan for breakouts? tonight when i played i did good but i missed a few runouts because my breakouts didnt work.. they would double kiss and go right back.. also i have problems with rail shots other than that i feel im a good shot.. if i set up drills for a rail shot i think if i keep missing ill just get pissed and still not know how to do them and then it wouldnt work.. thanks for your help guys

I personally preffer the hard break but a hard break that is controlled.

To get in as many balls as possible and to stay in the middle of the table is a break that simply can't fail.

But to stay in the middle of the table after the break is more important then to get more balls on the break i think.

I mean, less balls but cue ball middle of table > more balls and cue ball go on a crazy wild ride all over the place.

no im not going to switch to a soft break in play just for practice to try out diffrent breakouts so when i get that 1 cluster in a hard break i know how to get it out

That's wise.

But such a pain in the ass to run out a rack of clustered balls lol.

Ronnie Alcano the 2006 wpc used that soft break against ralph Souquet and almost every racks he had to do difficult run outs due to that break...

You should look at the final of the 2006 wpc between Alcano and Souquet, that is a very good way to learn how to get out of the soft break clustered balls patterns situations.
